A man arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson has been told he will not face any charges, British prosecutors said Tuesday.
Johnson played for the Nottingham Panthers and died shortly after his neck had been sliced in a collision with Sheffield Steelers defenseman Matt Petgrave during a game on Oct. 28, 2023.
A man was arrested two weeks later and though South Yorkshire Police has not publicly identified him, Petgrave himself said in a crowdfunding appeal for legal fees that he’s the subject of a police investigation.
On Tuesday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided it would not bring criminal charges against the man arrested following what it described as “a shocking and deeply upsetting incident.”
“The CPS and South Yorkshire Police have worked closely together to determine whether any criminal charges should be brought against the other ice hockey player involved,” Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn said.
“Following a thorough police investigation and a comprehensive review of all the evidence by the CPS, we have concluded that there is not a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offense and so there will not be a prosecution. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Adam Johnson.”

Former NHL player dies after ‘freak accident’ in English hockey league game

Should have been spending his first year in prison already.
Hope the Johnson family brings a civil suit.
Freak accident my ass.
Free to kill again.
Judging from the video this was no accident.
I played hockey for many years, so I looked at the video without knowing anything about the players involved.
I was prepared to be impartial, and on the first viewing, I was inclined to think it was one of those things that happened.
But when I viewed a second time, frame by frame...it looked filthy dirty to me.
Then I viewed it at .25 speed, and if definitely looked dirty.
The first time at full speed, I have seen a lot of guys get hip checked in the lower extremities causing the limb to fly like that. But in looking at it in slow motion, I saw no impact that would cause that.
It looked to me like he simply threw his leg into the air. Not sure if they could prove anything, but I sure didn’t see any good hit on him that would throw his leg into the air like that.
And looking at it one last time-he threw his leg up.
I tend to agree. And I was fully prepared to be impartial.
When it happens fast, I have seen a lot of players whose leg flies into the air like that, but it is caused by a fast, lateral impact to the single lower extremity especially when the direction of the player making impact to the single leg is traveling nearly perpendicularly to the other person as in a cutting across.
When done by a defenseman, it is a beautiful move that brings people to their feet, and causes the opponent’s fans (the honest ones) to say “Damn. That was a good check.”
This was not that.
In slow motion...you see there is no fast, lateral impact. Disgusting.
Hope he never gets paid to play again.
I defer to you skaters’ knowledge and have a question. Do you think the player tried to slice the neck specifically?
In fact, I hope he never gets to play hockey ever again.
No. I don’t think at all that was his intent. But that was what happened.
In my opinion, he is responsible for that man’s death in the same way a drunk driver is responsible for another human whose life ended because he passed out at the wheel.
I see his actions that ended his opponent’s life in exactly the same way I view that drunk driver. He was stupid and aggressive. And ended a man’s life because of it.
I don’t know if he can be charged or convicted if he is.
But HE knows what he did.
If Neely's skate had injured Ulf Samuelson (or someone else) there would have been no question it was an accident. But what that player did...nope. It looked intentional to me.
Thanks, perhaps involuntary manslaughter then. I’m not a legal expert by any means. That was a terrible thing to see.
Well it may not seem like enough but Petgrave knows what his intent was and he has to live with it the rest of his life.
