Scientists Discover the Largest Anaconda Ever Found in the Amazon During Will Smith’s Show Set

Scientists filming for a National Geographic TV show with Will Smith have uncovered a previously unknown species of giant anaconda deep within the Ecuadorian Amazon. This groundbreaking discovery has stunned the scientific world and may forever alter what we know about these elusive creatures.

A Discovery Like No Other

The team, led by Professor Bryan Fry from the University of Queensland, made their remarkable find while exploring the remote Bameno region of the Baihuaeri Waorani Territory—an area that rarely sees outsiders.

The newly identified species, named the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayima), has the potential to grow over 20 feet long, breaking the previous records for the largest known anaconda.

This exciting discovery took place while the team was filming for the upcoming National Geographic series “Pole to Pole with Will Smith”.

The Hunt for the Biggest Snake in the World

During their 10-day expedition, the scientists were guided by indigenous hunters, who led them through the jungle to find the giant snakes that locals had long believed to be the largest in existence.

The team paddled down river systems in canoes, capturing multiple specimens of the massive snake, including one that measured a stunning 20.7 feet.

The Local Legend: Snakes Growing Over 24 Feet?

What makes this discovery even more fascinating are the local legends surrounding these snakes.

According to indigenous reports, these massive anacondas are believed to grow even larger, with some suggesting that they can exceed 24 feet in length. If proven true, this would make the northern green anaconda the largest snake on the planet.

The Waorani people, who consider these giant snakes sacred, have long held the belief that the largest anacondas exist in their region, with reports indicating that some may surpass 7.5 meters (over 24 feet).

The Amazon’s Hidden Giant

The expedition was a difficult one, with the team paddling through the river system to reach remote regions where these giant snakes hide. The anacondas were found in the shallows, waiting for their prey.

The team captured and studied several of these massive snakes during their journey, including the largest one at 6.3 meters (20.7 feet) long. This discovery has left scientists in awe, raising questions about how many more of these giant snakes might be hidden in the Amazon’s vast, untapped wilderness.

Could even larger anacondas still be lurking in the region? One thing is clear: the northern green anaconda is rewriting the record books, and the Amazon continues to hold secrets that even modern science has yet to uncover.

In 1959 that was the Belgian Congo. After the Congo became independent in 1960, Katanga seceded under its leader Moise Tshombe, but the international community wouldn’t permit that—the colonial borders in Africa were sacred even if many of them made little sense. The first leader of the Congo was the leftist Patrice Lumumba, for whom the Soviets named a university.

Nateman, 'ol buddy - they are alligators in our Everglades.

Unless of course, the pythons in the Everglades only seek out crocodiles that have escaped from nearby zoos...

Also on National Geographic...
Magician David Blaine, in the first episode of his new Don’t Try This show, was taken deep into Brazilian wetlands to meet face to face with a potentially 25 foot, 500 pound anaconda female. Didn’t seem to be so scary in her own environment. He was with a female doctor/explorer who has accomplished many unbelievable things.

It’s a pretty cool show as Blaine is learning from many other magnificent specialists to achieve magician-bucket list experiences, like petting an anaconda in the wild or jumping off a bridge on fire. That’s just episode 1!
