The police COULD be smarter and not easily weaponized against citizens. If they wanted to.

Unfortunately it’s not that easy.

Caller ID was created during the 80s for landline phones. Since the phone company controlled the phone lines they didn’t bother putting any security in the protocol. So anyone with a computer can fake a caller id number.

There is supposed to be an enhanced Caller ID protocol called SHAKEN/STIR but the cell companies have been dragging their feet on it.
