Aviation saw rapid innovation and growth after the first flight in 1903, leading to the moon landing in 1969. Similarly, advancements in digital technology allow pilots of all skill levels to experience flight from home through realistic flight simulators.
These programs and equipment educate pilots and provide true piloting experience without ever leaving the ground. Let us explore top flight simulator software and accessories for the best at-home simulation. You can also check out the FLYING Edition Rig to get started in the right direction.

I am so sorry. I had to run out the door because my wife volunteers at the Museum of Flight near Seattle pretty much every Sunday. So, I am now sitting in the parking lot using the internet connection from my phone.
No, I believe that the last version that started at Meigs Feild was MSFS 2004. For me that changed in MS FSX. For me that version started off at Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. But I think that this might have varied for people living in other parts of the country.
There is a different start up procedure in MSFS 2020 & 2024...
To start a free flight session in MSFS 2020 or 2024, follow these steps:
Launch the simulator and navigate to the main menu.
Select the World Map option.
Choose your desired aircraft and livery. (color etc.)
Click on the map to select your desired departure airport, or search for it using the search bar.
Click on the airport icon and select Set as Departure (you can set your desired runway or parking location as well).
If you prefer, you can also set a destination airport in the same manner. However, this step is optional, and you can still fly without a specific destination.
Once you've set your departure (and optional destination), simply click on the Fly button at the bottom of the screen.
There are a bunch of YouTube videos that show you how to do this.

If you’re going to grognard ... :)
Sublogic Flight Simulator was released on Apple ][ in 1979. The Atari 800 version was “Sublogic Flight Simulator II” four years later.
I did want to remind people that MSFS 2020 and 2024 have both been made available for free when you sign up for Microsoft Game Pass. The free trial period for Game Pass is usually 14 days these days but they have special offers where you can get it for free for a longer period of time. It is always a good idea to try some type of free trial with any software that you purchase.
When MSFS 202 came out, whether it would run on your computer depended on the computer and the settings that you used... It ran fine with slowish frame rates and some of the details turned down on my Envy x360 laptop with a Ryzen 5 processor and no dedicated GPU. I received messages saying that my computer did not meet the minimum recommended hardware requirements which I just ignored.
Unfortunately, after a few years the developers kept adding more features and the performance began to suffer on that laptop. So, I eventually purchased a more powerful laptop with a dedicated GPU.
An American Airlines Boeing 737 fully loaded with passengers...
DCS is great (has optional built in adaptability for VR too).
The base sim is free and you start with a P-51 (and a couple of Russian jets).
I think it also comes with an A-10 too.
I have added on aircraft over the years.
I am out and about right now, but I purchased the Aviator edition of 2024 because I have spent so much money buying additional aircraft over the years. I know I have at least one 737 but I am not sure... it might have been something that I purchased previously. I do not believe that I have an American Airlines livery. The passengers can be added to the weight and balance, but I am not sure if there is an add-on to make them visible in the simulator...
No.
I’ve been sim flying MSFS since the very beginning in the early 80s. I’ve had every version of the software and can realistically fly every aircraft they have. I especially love to fly the jet airliners these days. IMO, nothing compares to the realism and eye candy of MSFS.
Very neat!
If you’re on a PC get a Nvidia geforce 2800 or better. Runs MSFS 2024 very nice with awesome frame rate.
I’d searched all over WAY back when for tips on running the game and never heard of DOSBOX. I haven’t been able to play it since win7.
THANKS MUCH!!!
Did you mean 280?
PMDG makes the best payware 737 by far in my opinion. The fully functional FMC is way cool and fun to setup.
Whoops, I meant Nvidia geforce 2080
Excellent quality.. and VR will blow your mind (if you have it).
I also use TM Warthog HOTAS (flight stick and throttle set.. A-10 replica). That took forever to save up for :P
Bought them all (minus X-PLANE) until FSX.
Didn't necessarily spend a lot, as there was plenty of freeware to keep it interesting. I did my part for awhile by creating real-world airline traffic using pdf timetable data and then sharing that with the community, but once timetable data went all digital, that was the end of that.
I did purchase FS2020, but never found an aircraft that could fly worth a darn...might be my setup(gameport controllers using usb adapters), I don't know. Even bought an HP VR set...that was cool, but made me dizzy.
I'm content with fs2004, it doesn't have all the fancy stuff...but it's smooth with few glitches and lots of great freeware aircraft/scenery.
Must admit...X-Plane does look interesting...might try that out.
I will look into that.
For a very soft core gamer like me, probably enough.
They still have a website.
Another old DOS game I like is Seawolf.
688 Attack Sub or something like that.
Snooping around using sonar is a blast.
Let me know if you get ef2000 running.
Good luck.
