Caught red-beaked.
A frisky bird weathering mating season has taken aim at dozens of cars in a Massachusetts town — leaving residents shielding their vehicles from the feathered menace’s sharp beak, according to reports.
The pesky two-month mystery behind at least 25 punctured and shattered sideview mirrors and windshields in Rockport was recently cracked when a local caught the pileated woodpecker in the act.
“The woodpecker showed up and landed on the windshield wipers of the RV in our yard and was looking at its reflection,” Janelle Favaloro, 59, told Today.
“And we were like, ‘You know what, I bet he was the one that damaged the mirrors, as well.'”
Favaloro, one of the angry bird’s unsuspecting victims, shared the discovery on her neighborhood Facebook page, describing the “vandal” as “18 to 24 inches tall, wearing black and white with a red hat.”
Locals quickly revealed a flurry of similar damage left in the woodpecker’s path.
Mike Foster said the avian left a “nice big crack” on his Ford F-350 pickup truck.
“When it landed on the window, I thought it was my girlfriend tapping on the window,” he told the New York Times.

Sex crime.
Protected species. Can’t touch him.
For many years a particular red cardinal male combated my mirror on my car. Fortunately he was not a woodpecker that could have broken my mirror. The cardinal would go into full battle mode with ferocious attacks on my mirror. Due to age he is no more. I found him most amusing he also got scraps of food from our meals. I miss him.
Publicity stunt from a publicity-seeking bird...
my only question is how are the tesla’s doing?
Maybe he’s responding to his reflection thinking it’s another bird...
I’ve seen budgie birds fall in love with their own reflection thinking it was another bird...
Don’t punish him. The woodpecker is a gentle giant turning his life around and is a community inspiration.
Another terribly-written article by a female. Never ID’s the town. Gloucester?
That was my first thought - another terrorist attack on Telsa’s.
Mating season? So we are just assuming this bird is heterosexual?
There are more woodpeckers than one can count.
Everywhere and they are destructive
So tired of the protected mantra.
That’s what is presumed. If not in this story, I don’t know why not.
Helmet designers and other impact-related product manufacturers have studied woodpeckers anatomy that allows this massive force.
We have plenty of oak trees in our Florida yard so the pileated woodpeckers only attack the grubs and insects in the trees.
Male birds are a mean lot, right down to the soft little hummingbird. A little red cardinal will kill himself trying to get to his reflection in a window.
I remember a buddy at work coming back to his truck after a young Blue Jay sat in his open truck window and fought himself in the mirror and pooped. And pooped.
LOL, here it’s the robins, the males attack their reflection in the car side mirrors and crap all over the mirrors, the sides of the cars.8 keep telling them the pinstripes go horizontal not vertical.
For me, it is mockingbirds. Hours and hours of dueling himself. And pooping everywhere.
Tastes kinda like spotted owl.
