Lulu Roman, the brash Hee Haw comedian and gospel singer who delighted fans of the long-running country music variety show while turning her life around in the process, has died. She was 78.
Roman died Wednesday in Bellingham, Washington, her son, Damon Roman, told The Hollywood Reporter. She had moved there to be with him seven months ago. No cause of death has been determined. <
Roman appeared on the first episode of CBS’ Hee Haw in June 1969 and on the last one, with the show in syndication, in June 1993. During its impressive run, she reinvented herself as a gospel singer, and she would release more than a dozen albums, perform in concert and record with the likes of Dolly Parton. (Watch and hear her sing “Crazy” here).
Mike Patrick, Longtime ESPN Play-by-Play Man, Dies at 80 Born Bertha Louise Hable in a home for unwed mothers on May 6, 1946, Roman was dropped off at a Baptist facility for orphans in Dallas. A thyroid condition would cause her to be overweight, and she was never adopted.
She said she developed a drug problem while attending W.W. Samuell High School, and after graduating in 1964, she made ends meet performing in a comedy act billed as “Lulu Roman, the World’s Biggest Go-Go Dancer” in nightclubs owned by Jack Ruby.

Rest In Peace, Lulu.
I think of all the cast of Hee Haw the only surviving cast are Gaylord Sartain and Kathy Baker. Maybe some of “the honeys” but that’s it.
Thanks for the memories Lulu, Rest in peace.............
I am impressed she was still with us.
I hope her soul is with God.
Wow! Its amazing how old you folks are getting.
Rest in Peace, Lulu
I harbor no doubt that she's gone to that better place.
RIP. Hee Haw was peak nuclear family. I’ll always remember the Saturday nights I watched that show with my mom and dad and siblings.
She was a hoot. RIP
An inspiring story
To this day 7 pm on Saturday nights makes me think that it’s time for Hee Haw. Not kidding.
I had a trio that backed the Hagar Twins at rodeo halftime performances. They were nice guys with interesting stories about shooting the show, and mightily impressed with the talent of the other cast members.
I saw a recent picture of her awhile back and she had lost so much weight that she was less than 1/2 the woman she used to be.
She did good.
Saturday nights at our house were filled with Hee Haw and the Lawrence Welk Show, it doesn’t get anymore nuclear family than that
We did too!! And Lawrence Welk! On Thursdays, it was The Waltons and on Sunday, it was Wild Kingdom and then Disney, then bedtime afterwards.
Love Boat, Fantasy Island and the ABC Movie of the Week on Saturday nights. If I could stay awake long enough, my sister and I would watch Kolchak, Night Stalker and scream in terror, waking our parents up.
My mom would get us a frozen pizza, Jiffy Pop, a box of brownie mix and a 2 liter soda of our choice and let us have at it.
We thought we were rich although we were really poor. Looking back, I see that we had all the riches in the world.
Wunnerful wunnerful wunnerful! :-)
I remember those Saturday nights with the good of Hee Haw then the torture of the Lawrence Welk show.
Same here for the most part.
I had a couple of very long days at the expense of the 4 not so wunnerful women.
Long ago field production.
