I carry a pocketknife virtually everywhere. As a tool, not a weapon. Of course, a screwdriver can also be a formidable weapon in the right circumstances.
I’m so used to having the pocketknife that when I fly somewhere, I sometimes check my luggage with the knife, or buy a really cheap one at my destination and throw it away at the airport.
That is absolutely no excuse for this thug’s actions. But to make such a strong statement that a deadly weapon at a track meet is also a bit inflammatory.

Was it a pocketknife? Nobody said he had a pocketknife, just a knife. I suppose, with luck or a skilled person, a ‘pocketknife’ is still a deadly weapon (which is why you can’t fly with them), but they didn’t say pocketknife. The reality that the media (whom generally tries to defend liberals) didn’t say ‘Pocketknife’ makes me believe it was probably more like a hunting knife.
Are you actually trying to equate carrying a knife as an adult to that murderer carrying a knife at a school event?
As you stated you can not carry a knife through TSA at airport. Why not?
I haven't flown since Sept 2017. My EDC is a CRTK Obake in a kydex sheath on my belt. I use it to open the mail and boxes shipped from Amazon. Technically it could serve as a means of self defense. I leave it in the car when visiting the local hospital and courthouse.
