The former governor of Russia's Kursk region, parts of which were seized by Ukrainian forces in August 2024, has been detained and charged with embezzling money earmarked for building defences, Russia's interior ministry said on Thursday.

Alexei Smirnov was head of the western region when Ukrainian troops smashed across the border in a large-scale incursion.

In the first hours of Ukraine's August incursion into Kursk, Smirnov repeatedly offered assurances that the situation was under control, even as Russian border guards were left reeling and in retreat by the surprise attack.

That kind of crap happens on both sides. It should be punished harshly as the people most directly and immediately are the soldiers. I’m getting tired of all the bloodshed over there … most particularly any bloodshed resulting from corruption.

There was a Russian general charged with the same. He requested being deployed to the Uke front rather deployment to a Russian cell. Putin complied and sent him back as an NCO in a penal storm trooper unit. His corrupt arse is now drone bait at the front if he’s not dead already.

I can respect that method of punishment. We need something similar for at least 20% of the Pentagon.

According to YouTube blogger Perun the Russians have a new technique to more quickly find corruption. They monitor the battles to see if the food, fuel, and other items are causing losses when they were told those items were indeed there. From this they can quickly deduce who had access and sold them. Arrests and prosecution (whatever that means in this case) follow. The problem, Perun states is that the Russians have made no systemic changes to stop corruption which occurs at virtually every level. It’s astonishing they’ve done as well as they have. One of their best drone pilots filmed a video to be released after he died. In it, he said his commanding officer had seized and sold the equipment he’d crowd funded. Then he’d put this man in a four-man suicide squad.

Yes. I have heard similar stories from a source on the Ukrainian side. Both governments are very corrupt. My thought is the Ukrainians are slightly less corrupt because they are in an existential fight for their very existence.

This was not in a news report but from one of the Ukrainian soldiers relatives. It is a terrible war. Very stupid, very unnecessary.
The Russians... not so much.

It was reported to me, a Ukrainian soldier said, “Yes, there is a lot of corruption. But what choice do we have? If we lose we die and lose everything. If we die and win, at least our families have a chance.

The great tragedy of this war is that that is precisely false. The Ukrainians are dying en masse for exactly nothing so far as their own lives and wellbeing are concerned. Actually less than nothing, insofar as the autocratic EU regime is even more repressive than the far-less-than-perfect Russians.

It's not as if the Russian plan has been to invade and enslave the Ukrainian people or commit genocide. Anyone paying attention or who has bothered to learn the backstory on this conflict knows better. The SMO was motivated by the mistreatment of ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine, unleashed by the EU/NATO-backed coup that sent Russian security concerns through the roof. Safeguarding their borders and Russian people through the objectives of the SMO to take the eastern provinces does not entail any hardship for any Ukrainian citizen. Nor is the Ukrainian citizen threatened by denazification - rather the opposite.

At some point the negotations will happen and be completed, and even the most ardent Russia-haters will see this is the outcome of the negotiations, and realize the slaughter of the Ukrainians was literally for nothing more than pursuing the depraved and Orwellian agendas of the western globalists.

The Ukrainian 155th Brigade. 5.500 soldiers supposedly trained in France. When the unit arrived in Ukraine there were 3,700. They expect us to believe they all deserted. I’ll bet US taxpayers got charged full price for 5,500 when there were really 3,700.
