Ohtani seems genuinely thrilled to meet the president. The entire team was there and gave Trump his jersey.

I’m not a Dodger fan but I thank them for behaving like great Americans. Go Dodgers.

Shohei knows that his countrymen need him to make nice to the most powerful man in the world.

Great to see this vid of Trump and Ohtani in the Oval Office!

Here in Japan my wife and I are living on a 5-year residency visa north of Tokyo...

It's hard to find athletes with comparable fame in their home countries.  Pelé, Caitlin Clark, Ted Williams, Wayne Gretsky, Steffi Graf, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods.

Ohtani's presence is everywhere here in Nippon.  Every day he plays for the Dodgers, the TV news features a short video clip of his play that day.

And thanks largely to Ohtani, I can see all the Dodger games on national TV here.  And the telecasts are free.

So Ohtani meeting Trump in the Oval Office is PERFECT timing.  It instantly diffuses the tariff controversy as the Japanese news media and government have been debating the last few days.

Japan and the USA will work things out.  And why shouldn't they?  I just Googled and found:

The best-selling sedans in the United States in 2024 are the Toyota Camry, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, and Nissan Sentra

Honda has a big R&D plant here in the mid-sized city where I live.  My volunteer Japanese language instructor is the wife of a Honda employee whose family spent a couple years in Dublin, Ohio where Honda has its biggest U.S. plant.

And on the pickleball court, you learn how genuine Japan's respect is for America and our armed forces protecting the country.  Last weekend, a woman player visiting our local courts was wearing a sweatshirt with the logo of America's Yokota Air Base located near Tokyo.
