Bringing out Hillary Clinton in a NYT op-ed on this means the Democrats will not pursue this, because they do not want to risk attention drawn to themselves.

It's simpler than that. That old croak craves "hits", the name for a cable news spot quickie. The Donks don't have anyone running interference for who is getting spots. The old comrade crowd knows if we hold House & Senate, they're finished.
So she's getting in a "hit" quite intentionally to prevent the younger crowd like AOL from getting one, because the Democrats know AOL sends people fleeing to vote against Democrats. In her mind Cankles is holding down the Karen kontingent.
