After a storied career, that included over 70 film credits and two Academy Awards, Gene retired from film in 2004, after making his last appearance in Welcome to Mooseport.
Five years after trading in the lights of Hollywood for a quieter life in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife Betsy Arakawa—and 16 years before his death at the age of 95—the French Connection star finally explained why.
“The straw that broke the camel’s back was actually a stress test that I took in New York,” Gene said in an interview with Empire magazine published in 2009. “The doctor advised me that my heart wasn’t in the kind of shape that I should be putting it under any stress.”

Are all celebrities America haters?
I don’t see any evidence that anyone here worships celebrities either but I sure did enjoy watching Gene Hackman’s acting.
It must have been nearly 30 years ago that I was watching a movie with Hackman in it and the movie was really bad. Poor camera work, worse dialogue, lousy audio, terrible plot line and the other actors were rank amateurs. But Hackman’s acting was great. Watched the whole thing just to see his brilliance.
Since then I’ve watched every Gene Hackman movie I’ve run across and have never been disappointed.

The Godless need something to worship, despite what they say. So they pick something that most closely resembles their own values. Notice the smug superiority that some celebrities seem to have? They have a whole set of alternative moral values to counter the actual Biblical ones, which makes them the gods of the entertainment religion.

I never understood worship of actors who excel only at pretending something they are not.
He was a US Marine and served honorably, I never saw anything Americas hating in him. Tell us about your service record.

This article is strange. He was 79 in 2009 when his doctor said stop with the stress on your heart. He moved to New Mexico for a less stressful life. Millions of Americans do the same even younger typically to Florida or Arizona. Not a thing strange about this move.
It’s probably because he was 70+ and didn’t need the money. Don’t know if he was with his wife back then but if he was she would have been about 40. A 70 year old guy with a 40 year old girl....potential for lots and lots of fun.
