Some Blue Jays fans booed the United States' national anthem at Toronto's home opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
There were scattered but audible boos from the sold-out crowd at Rogers Centre as the "The Star-Spangled Banner" was sung by the 40-person ensemble from the local stage production of "the Lion King."
Those jeers turned to cheers and singing as the crowd joined in with the musical's cast for "O Canada" as members of the Canadian armed forces unfurled a giant Canadian flag in the outfield.
Fans at hockey, basketball and pro wrestling events in Canada have been booing the U.S. anthem in response to American President Donald Trump's punitive tariffs and repeated suggestions that Canada should join the U.S. as its "51st state."
Blue Jays manager John Schneider, who is from Princeton, N.J., said that he had spoken to his players about the possibility of the anthem being booed.
"That's not our focus," said Schneider during a pre-game conference with reporters. "Unless it's like (country music star) Chris Stapleton singing the anthem, I'm not really looking forward to the anthem unless he's singing it.
"We're expecting whatever is going to happen, and then focusing on the game. It's unfortunate. We get it, but I think we're focusing on the game."

Dear Canaduh,
STOP electing fascist dictators that stomp all over your personal freedoms.
Really.
Then the team from Baltimore, where the Star Spangled Banner was written, proceeded to shoot rockets red glare, hitting six homers, beating Canada’s Jays 12-2.
Karma
Baltimore then thrashed Toronto 12-2 :)
These Canadians are going to really kill off US tourism to Canada .
Once a fan of baseball I wasn’t even aware the baseball home openers were even happening.
“STOP electing fascist dictators that stomp all over your personal freedoms.”
Like we have?
Quite the beatdown.
How Sabermetrics Has Changed Baseball
1. Increased Strikeouts & Walks – Players now focus on home runs and walks rather than contact hitting, leading to fewer balls in play.
2. Defensive Shifts – Teams position defenders based on data, reducing the number of traditional base hits.
3. Openers & Bullpen Games – Starting pitchers are used less, with relievers taking on a bigger role, changing the rhythm of the game.
4. Fewer Stolen Bases & Small Ball – Analytics often discourage stolen bases and bunts since they’re statistically inefficient.
Why Some Say It’s Ruining the Game
Less Action: More strikeouts and fewer balls in play make the game feel slower and less exciting.
Homogenized Strategy: Every team is using the same analytics-driven approach, reducing stylistic differences.
Devaluing Traditional Skills: Contact hitters, base stealers, and finesse pitchers are less valued than in the past.
Longer Games: Increased pitching changes and deep counts have contributed to longer game times.
“Like we have?”
Yeah, it seems like the whole of countries founded on the fundamentals of Western Civilization are now on the Wrong Path.
It goes to show that any sport built around play from a "stop" position where one team is in full control of the ball (this would include baseball, football, and basketball) has a tendency to become boring as hell because it becomes increasingly easy to analyze it to death.
LOL. Canada, hitting back with all its might. Do they really think anyone cares, or they are winning anyone over by booing the anthem? Maybe they could drag a Tesla from the parking and burn it as well.
I’m not that fine tuned. My disinterest is sports wide along with most entertainment these days. If I was still gung ho about baseball none of that would matter but other issues have made all spectator sports flatline for me.
They probably need to change the rules yearly. 2 strikes in baseball. 3 downs in football. Remove the 3 point line in basketball.
Mix it up.
I guess we could just ask Toronto to stay in Canada and play all their games against other Canadian MLB teams.
Not a huge surprise. Most sports fans act in a ‘follow the leader’ kind of way. The media is painting all Americans as evil, therefore, it must be true. I haven’t had that degree of faith in my media in a long, long time. Probably starting with the second Clinton administration, is where I began to doubt them most of the time. I was listening to Rush and thought about it later for myself.
O Canada, we are not your slot machine. Bankroll your own leftist policies. Twits.
Ah, yes, the no borders, one-with-the-world, mass migration, globalism & WEF first, liberal Canadians are pretending to care about their country again, when what they are actually doing is just hating the US and continuing the decline of their nation.
Go Expos!
