On the spectrum refers to various stages of autism. Some children are high-functioning autistic (can have a genius level IQ but are socially awkward) or low functioning (need helmets to protect their heads because they will repeatedly smash their heads into the wall).
Our brains receive a tremendous amount of data every second: sounds, smells, touch, and sight. Most people have filters for the brain that suppress ancillary data and only focus on things when something is off, smells weird, is uncomfortable, too loud, etc.
People with autism lack those filters, so it’s sensory overload all the time. Think tinnitus at volume 25 while sitting on thumbtacks next to a stinking dumpster.
Even a loving hug from a mother can evoke a pain response.
God has placed many challenges on autistic individuals. They live lonely, confusing lives.
We should treat them with compassion, not scorn.
FYI, the innocent child was on the spectrum, not the killer.
The killer should fry.
Trained to feel entitled.
