Detectives on Tuesday were trying to solve a mystery after two bodies were found in the back of an abandoned pickup truck in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The discovery was made along Highway 35/Skyline Boulevard, three miles south of Castle Rock State Park.
In a statement, the California Highway Patrol said this is an active and ongoing investigation, adding that "two deceased individuals were located in a vehicle…As the deaths were not witnessed, they are coded as suspicious until a coroner can confirm cause and manner of death."
The CHP said if autopsy results indicate something more, they’ll follow those investigative leads.
A tow truck, escorted by a CHP vehicle, was seen Tuesday hauling away the pickup truck where sources said they found the two bodies.
It’s a quiet and remote area with few residents, and there were no visible surveillance cameras.
Castle Rock, however, is popular with hikers. Many were stunned to hear about the grim discovery, given the popularity of the park.

Yikes 😳
Thanks. Yes, it is indeed a great place to hike. Sad to hear about these deaths. Cartel-related maybe?
Stealth camping?
Norteno and Suareno gang turf front lines. It won’t be “white supremacy” but it may be some “white hispanics” who committed this.
A friend checked himself out in that area in the ‘70s.
Cyanide from the lab. Violent way to go and no one knew why.
So I listened to the news video and here are a few observations...
- “...found in back of pickup truck...” When I first heard that, I was wondering if it meant the bed but the video looked like the bed was full of dirt bikes (?) but it also showed that it was a pickup truck with a back seat. Therefore I concluded that ‘back of the pickup truck’ likely meant the back seat.
- The deaths were called ‘suspicious’... I suppose a bullet in the head could be termed ‘suspicious’ but I don’t think that is the word that would typically get used.
- I think it was said that the truck was parked in a ‘remote’ area...
- It was stated by the former police officer being interviewed that ‘the investigation would be complicated’.
Years ago, some kids in my school were out drinking beer and parked at the side of the road.... there was four in the car and they were all found dead the next afternoon. Turns out the car was left idling as it wintertime and enough carbon monoxide got in that it killed them all. The piece didn’t say anything about the sex of the individuals but perhaps it was a couple looking for privacy in a back seat. Or perhaps it was to individuals who took some very bad drugs.....
A cartel possibly leaving dead bodies in a pickup truck in the vicinity does not sound like a great place to hike.
wait until you hear about the roaming hungry grizzlies spotted along the trail...
Castle Rock?...hmmmm
I would rather be around the brown bears on the East Coast. They are more polite.
I assume that if they were cartel-related, they would be shot. The first report made it sound like they didn’t weren’t sure these were murders. I assume if they were shot, that would not be in doubt.
I used to climb at Castle Rock (Goat Rock, waterfall). Fun place.
The grizzlies were killed off in the Santa Cruz mountains in the 19th century.
That park is more known for tech executives, than cartel operations. Usually, the "grows" are off trail, so people won't see them. If they start shooting hikers, it's not going to last long,
I did see three men in camo jackets with bolt action rifles on a hiking trail in Big Sur's Ventana Wilderness.
In 2005, they raided a big plantation somewhere on Mount Umunhum. I later met the ranger who got shot in that operation.
What are the "grows?"
