I’ve noticed it also resurfaces on FR when one of our Catholic apologists gets bored and needs to stir things up.
What’s the Roman Catholic’s issue with Freemasons?
I’m assuming it’s a vestige of Protestant/Roman Catholic mutual disagreement, given Freemasons were a big deal in England, once upon a time, but I don’t know that.
Grok, FWIW, answered my question:
In some countries, especially in England, Europe, and Latin America, Freemasons were linked to revolutionary and Protestant movements that opposed Catholic monarchies or the Church’s influence, like during the Enlightenment or the 19th-century liberal upheavals. Several Masonic groups were responsible for the publishing and distribution of the Christian Bible in the language of local communities, as opposed to Latin. This fueled the perception of Freemasonry as a subversive force.
