California advises users of DNA genealogy website to erase their data after financial report

California Attorney General Rob Bonta is warning about a risk to their data from a company that recently reported it was in financial distress.

According to the Attorney General’s office, 23andMe said in security filings that there is “substantial doubt” about the genetic testing-focused company’s future.

Bonta advised California residents of their right under the Genetic Information Privacy Act and California Consumer Protection Act to request their data held by companies be deleted and genetic materials be destroyed.

“California has robust privacy laws that allow consumers to take control and request that a company delete their genetic data,” Bonta said. “Given 23andMe’s reported financial distress, I remind Californians to consider invoking their rights and directing 23andMe to delete their data and destroy any samples of genetic material held by the company.”

Bonta’s office compiled the following steps to request data be deleted:

California's also in financial distress, but they never issue warnings about that.

They may provide for personal DNA records to be deleted from company records.
However, I’d bet the proverbial “dollars to doughnuts” that some government agency still has them.

LOL... Once you give your DNA... They have your DNA. There is no going back. The only question is... Unless you’re a serial killer, or you are related to a serial killer or criminal... Why care?

It’s not like they’re going to clone you... LOL

When I joined ancestrydotcom about five years or so ago, I figured the worst thing that could happen was that I had left a child or two behind someplace(s).
I’m adopted, so I had to take the chance.
Knowing nothing was killing me.
I can’t believe how great it has worked out.

They did my DNA, I turned out to belong to the same species as the Arby's sandwich I'd just eaten for lunch. They really do have the meat, or perhaps 23andMeat. :^)

Still going to be out there lol, personally I never understood this obsession with “finding” your past.
I am of Lithuanian and German descent, and that means what exactly. I have as much in common with them for my day to day life as someone with Italian descent.

Maybe just me

That is the about the most ridiculous question I have ever read. These people belong in rooms with padded walls. No, dummy, the DNA cannot be changed for your friend. Reality bites

It is not exactly an obsession. It is more like a mystery to be solved. People love to solve mysteries and puzzles, especially regarding family.

The letter said, "You appear to be related to the kaiser. Not the ruler, the roll." It was a rough day.

So my DIL has a rare, fatal neurological disease in her family. It surfaces when the mom has dominant gene and dad has recessive.

Since my wife was adopted, we did genetic testing to find out if my grandkids would be at risk. Using the data, we found my wife’s bio family and got some of my family history as well.

We used 23 and Me. At first they had many “updates” where they would tell you about genetic tendencies and possible areas of concern. In the five years since, 23 and Me has transformed into nothing but a money grab. Just about any bit of useful information is only available with a “Premium” plan.

“personally I never understood this obsession with “finding” your past.”

It’s a hobby for many....I’ve got relatives that are very active in my family’s genealogy....me not so much, other than I’d be interested to know what was going on in my family tree during the Civil War.

Also, genealogy is a double edged sword.

I saw a documentary last year about a Jewush man that used 23andme to trace his family and found out some things he was completely unprepared for.

I’ve also heard stories about people finding out they’re not as pure of race as they thought.

True, there is particularly racist black leader who found out on a show that she had white in her family, and it nearly destroyed right there and then
