He was 76 years old.

His family announced the news on his Instagram page on Friday night.

Also as his response to the two guys who did the black power salute on the podium a few days before.

Nineteen years old when he won heavyweight gold at the 1968 Mexico City Summer Olympics. Waved an American flag, didn’t raise a fist in protest. “What a physic!”

My favorite boxer since about 1970, the last of an era of when the heavyweight division shone brightly. Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Norton, etc.

George lived both sides in his life, street-fighting gangbanger, and wholesome preacher and beloved father. And he hit just as hard in both roles.

A proud American gold-medalist in 1968 and a role model any parent could feel good about. RIP George (George I that is). LOL

"Speaking of William Shatner, tomorrow is his birthday."

Thanks for letting us know. He's 94 today. May he enjoy many, many more.

I didn’t know he observed that about Morrison. Hmm.

I wonder what would have happened to George had he not lost to Ali. Would that Foreman have been the same guy years later we welcomed into our homes with his grill and his big smile and his colorful children naming ways? (I also wonder had Ali lost, would he have abandoned rope-a-dope and not taken so many punches and avoided Parkinson’s?)

He only lost 5 fights...

It is often helpful in evaluating a fighter to see who beat him. Foreman only lost to Ali, Young, Holyfield, Tommy Morrison, and Shannon Briggs. No bad loses in that group, particularly when you consider George's age in those last three bouts. Truly one of boxing's great and a great guy once he found the Lord. The difference between the converted George Foreman and the young George Foreman is stark.

Another great thing about Foreman was what he refused to do when he won the Gold Medal for boxing in the 1968 Mexico Olympics. It was in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City where US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos performed the Black Power salute during their medal ceremony to protest racial discrimination and inequality in the United States.

Foreman instead, walked around the ring waving a small American flag after his victory. He later explained that although he grew up in pervasive poverty of a decaying urban ghetto, he appreciated his country for giving him the chance to leave his bleak surroundings through the Job Corps.
