WASHINGTON, March 19 (Reuters) - The top two Republican lawmakers who lead the Pentagon's oversight committees in the U.S. Congress issued a rare, joint statement on Wednesday expressing alarm about a potential shake-up in U.S. military commands by the Trump administration. The statement from the offices of Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers cited press reports, including that the Trump administration is weighing relinquishing the U.S. role as NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe.
The position, which oversees all NATO operations in Europe, has been filled by a four-star U.S. general since its creation in 1950. Sources familiar with the matter tell Reuters such a possibility has been discussed but may ultimately not be viable and that no announcement is imminent.
"We will not accept significant changes to our warfighting structure that are made without a rigorous interagency process, coordination with combatant commanders and the Joint Staff, and collaboration with Congress," Wicker and Rogers said in the statement.
"Such moves risk undermining American deterrence around the globe and detracting from our negotiating positions with America's adversaries."
NBC News first reported the possible U.S. relinquishment of the job of SACEUR, as the position is known, and said it could be presented as part of a broader cost-cutting shake-up in military commands that could see several positions consolidated.

Doesn't look like they tried very hard to stop it, but then maybe this is just another strongly-worded-letter the GOP likes to put out...
Let me guess. It’s crucial to some Republicans that certain generals are retained who have back-channel communications directly with the CCP behind the President’s back? Is that it?
Get the USA out of NATO.
After seeing Russia’s ineptitude against Ukraine I can’t see the Russian Hoard coming across the Fulda Gap to take over Europe. The need for the USA as part of NATO may not be there anymore.
These two neocons are fighting to make sure any changes in command don’t screw up the corrupt MICC gravy train. When DOGE brings the meat axe to DoD, expect these two warmongers to start keying Teslas or worse.
A lot of “rare”’statements being made these days. I wonder how come that is…?
Reuters is globalist trash. Anything they put out is not reliable at all.
As Churchill said the whole purpose of NATO was to keep the Germans down, The Russians out and the Americans in. He also knew it would be mostly funded by American taxpayers. Well now with America over $35 trillion in debt, its time to say goodbye and good luck.
The major problem is NATO countries are no longer in agreement as to who are allies and who are adversaries.
This is why NATO should have been disbanded after the break-up of the Soviet Union. A bunch of career NATO warmongers have to keep finding new countries to attack and people to kill. This is the age-old problem with standing armies. They have try out their latest mass-murder weapons and start wars to get senior officers promoted.
NATO has become a giant, murderous BLOB dragging the world toward nuclear war.
“Gee, what good are these shiny new killing machines if we can’t unleash them on somebody?”
“How can I get combat experience to help me get promoted in military rank if the world is at peace?”
“Reuters is globalist trash.”
But they might be reporting accurately this time (randomly). After all, the GOP is not called “The STUPID Party” for nothing.
“After seeing Russia’s ineptitude against Ukraine I can’t see the Russian Hoard coming across the Fulda Gap to take over Europe.”
the soviets seem to be out of drones, rockets, tanks, and soldiers anyway, given that they’re having to buy drones and rockets from iran and import soldiers from Norkland ...

I don't believe NATO is needed. The EU nations let their military preparedness atrophy - they really aren't afraid of Russia.
I don't believe Russia's performance in Ukraine is inept - they have been fighting the combined forces of NATO in this proxy war, and NATO lost.
From the start of the war, Russia wanted to force negotiations (Biowarfare labs, no Ukraine in NATO etc.) and kept knocking the Ukrainian infrastructure, expecting the Ukraine to negotiate. But the Ukraine is just a front for NATO, and NATO doesn't care about the citizens having running water and electricity.
Gradually, Russia upped it's damage to infrastructure, and eventually (longer than Russian citizens wanted) Putin concluded that Ukraine would never ever negotiate (NATO wouldn't allow it), and then the gloves came off.
The US needs to get out, and stay out, of NATO - they only see us as a cash cow and fall-guy/scape goat. Zelensky has been saying for quite some time that his 'victory plan' requires the US enter the war directly. He and his handlers are still holding out for that. How does any of this benefit the US? They are using us.
Minor correction “4/5 star” needs to read “3/4 star.” There have not been any 5 star generals or admirals living since General of the Army Omar Bradley died in 1981. He was 88 years old. On 22 September 1950, he was promoted to the rank of General of the Army, the fifth—and last—person to achieve that rank. He retired from active service in 1953.
It sounds like this is a first step in that direction.
For the good of this nation both Senator Roger Wicker and Representative Mike Rogers should be cashiered.
Republicans? I remember one speaker Newt saying the Pentagon should be changed to a triangle.
We’ve been footing the bill since the 1950’s. Someone else should take some incentive.
