American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten said she was "spitting mad" over the staffing cuts at the Department of Education, describing it as an "evisceration by a thousand cuts."
"So what it does is that it levels the playing field, so all kids can have opportunity, and that it was they are cutting, and when they cut half the people, it's like evisceration by a thousand cuts," Weingarten said, listing the Department of Education's duties.
The Department of Education announced on Tuesday that it would be shrinking its workforce from around 4,133 to around 2,183 employees. Remaining workers impacted by the reductions will be placed on administrative leave beginning March 21.
"I'm so mad, I'm spitting mad about this, because it's hurting the people who can't vote, children don't vote! Let's not take away their opportunity," she continued.
"What they did yesterday was cowardly. Have the fight with the 65% of Americans who believe we need to have an education department," she said earlier in the discussion. "Fact, education is done at the local level. State governments, state education departments, local school boards. That’s who does education. And we believe that and we want that. But this is what the federal Department of Education does. It’s the opportunity agent. It’s the equalizer."
She said the department helps with providing children with reading specialists for certain disabilities, getting students occupational therapists, Pell grants, and more.

If this ‘department’ was doing it’s job effectively, it wouldn’t be facing this closure.

Thomas Sowell explained the importance of the Education Department in one of his classic works. Basically, before the DOE, we had 50 states, each setting their own policies in education, and pretty much each state trying to outcompete the others, by upholding high standards.
The Left did not like that one bit as their PRIME OBJECTIVE was (and is) to “Weaken the West” (hence forever wars including Ukraine, massive migration, Globohomo, etc.). The Leftists needed to work in 50 state capitals to achieve their goals and it was tough and expensive.
BUT, if everything could be run at the DC level, then the Left could concentrate their efforts. Back at the state level, decisions could only be made within certain constraints developed by the feds, or no more federal money. Since the schools, even 50 years ago, were run by Leftists, the schools were perfectly happy to have that arrangement. The people being cut-out of the loop were the state governments...often comprised of people who actually wanted their kids to learn reading and math.
So they got their DOE and the rest was history - the Left quickly managed to bring the US from the top rungs in education to pretty much DEAD LAST.
It’s a MAJOR success story for the Left and for those who might think otherwise...you have NO CLUE as to what the Left wants for this country - read up on them a bit.

I’m 66 and I’m fairly sure I’ve been hearing Weingarten’s name in the news since I was a teenager. Enough already. Demons never retire, they just go on and on.
Randi Weingarten is just another liberal who is mad that her little kingdom has crumbled. The left set up little kingdoms with thrones under the umbrella of government and installed loyal comrades who could never win an election. Those days are over and that sound you hear is a giant temper tantrum.
She’s probably just worried her $500K yearly salary for doing nothing except ranting and raving might disappear.
This pathetic “educator” is a significant reason why government education has hailed for decades (look at achievement scores). The only thing these union “educators” have accomplished is getting themselves more money, larger pensions, more time off and greater benefits. They have failed the children, parents and communities. Just look at the test scores for the last several decades....Down, Down, Down. Complete failure. Students may have advanced sometimes...but that has been in spite of these nitwit usually leftist “educators”.
UNION dues==$200 to $1000/year for teachers.
