Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., was mocked by conservatives on social media Friday after he posted a video on X explaining he was getting rid of his Tesla because of the optics brought by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who Kelly referred to as an "a--hole."
Kelly, a retired astronaut, said he bought a Tesla because it was "fast like a rocket ship" but now it feels like "a rolling billboard for a man dismantling our government and hurting people."
The Arizona senator and military veteran said it's been difficult driving around in a Tesla knowing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has cut jobs at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Kelly said today would be his last day driving a Tesla.
Kelly added in the video that Elon Musk "kind of turned out to be an a--hole" and that he would rather not drive around in a car "built and designed by an ---hole."
Conservatives on X were quick to mock Kelly's post.
"Literally the most stunning and brave thing a politician has ever done. It’s so brave that I have actually been moved to tears," White House rapid responder Greg Price said in a post.
"There are no more ‘moderate’ Democrats," conservative influencer account Johnny Maga posted on X in response to Kelly's video.

I may reconsider owning a Tesla auto.
Just had the an idea. Tesla can market a gas auto and call it the MAGA.
John DeLorean , the man behind the Pontiac GTO was kind of an arrogant jerk. I’m not going to get rid of my 67 GTO because I didn’t like the guy.
Kelly should have just keyed it. That’s what most Democrats do to make themselves feel better.
That's a fair point. However, the use of neither GM products nor Bud Light had any claimed wider benefit to humanity. But to the Left, driving a Tesla was supposed to help fend off global warming. It wasn't just a matter of style or taste, but "doing the right thing."
So what this anti-Tesla boycott really says is "I care more about making a political statement than about saving the planet." So in that respect, it's quite an indictment of their own claimed moral virtue.
All these a-holes ditching their Teslas has me looking into getting one cheap. If I do, I will be putting an “Elon 2028” sticker on it too.
You have a great car.
“John DeLorean , the man behind the Pontiac GTO was kind of an arrogant jerk”
Probably the least of his issues. Got Coke?
He’s never had a private sector job. He knows nothing about managing budgets and controlling costs.
Savings hundreds of billions JUST MIGHT save the Republican from insolvency and destruction.
Touché. Excellent clarification on why the left is hypocritical with the Tesla bashing. Hadn’t thought of that aspect.
Thanks! I bought it in 1990 when they were affordable.
These guys are dumb. They already paid for it.
He is also an import to Arizona. Kelly was born and raised on the east coast, New Jersey...
This fool never lived in Arizona! His so called “residence” is a house that his wife owns in Tucson. They actually live in Houston.
Check back in 6 months or less when the Elon Musk furor dies down a little and Kelly is driving the Tesla again and his virtue signaling is exposed
I think a quick search of Mark Kelly’s previous statements would have us believe that he bought a Tesla to save the world. I guess he changed his views on saving the environment.
As a former Astronaut he should be praising Elon Musk for rescuing the Stranded astronauts at the ISS.
Hell, THEY’RE DEMOCRATS. THE RULES ARE FOR THE FOOLS in that OTHER PARTY (that just kicked THEIR ASSES)!
