KYIV — Ukraine is shrinking.
The war has killed tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers. At least 5 million more have fled and live outside Ukraine, and a fifth of the country — another 5 million people — is under Russian occupation.
Ukraine’s population at independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 was over 50 million. Now just 31 million live in land controlled by Kyiv. And the number of deaths is nearly three times the number of births, according to the justice minister.
These missing Ukrainians — the ones who have fled, the dead, the occupied — have left a gaping hole in today’s Ukraine that will greatly shape what sort of country will be left when the conflict ends. A diminished population could have a major impact on the country’s economic health, political stability, ethnic makeup and ability to fight wars in the future.
As President Volodymyr Zelensky travels to the United States to meet with President Donald Trump and discuss a deal for the country’s minerals and a possible end to the war, the issue looms in the background.
Reversing the demographic decline is critical and “on par with our victory in the war, achieving a just and stable peace, membership in the E.U. and NATO, and rebuilding the country,” said Mykola Kniazhytskyi, an opposition parliament deputy.
Today, Ukraine’s population, including the areas under Russian occupation, is believed to be just under 36 million, officials say, down from roughly 41 million when the war broke out. These numbers are estimates, however, and could be much lower.
If demographic trends continue, Ukraine’s population is expected to be around 25 million by mid-century and just 15 million in 2100.

Oh, Good Lord.
The guy with 30 felony convictions had to spring the January 6th hostages and the FACE Act hostages from the DC Lubyanka.
Agent Nesty lives in Russia, and video-blogs on Youtube from there.
Tell that to Gonzalo Lira, who tried to escape across the border into Hungary from The Giant Prison That Is The Ukraine.
Oh, wait - no, you can't, because the SBU killed Gonzalo Lira in a Ukrainian prison.
Sounds like our buddy “wrongbro” adorno got his monthly prescription for “clown opinion” pills filled yesterday...
I suspect he’s paid to post.
A matter of definitions.
North America, Australia, New Zealand, Europe (to include Russia on the periphery), and Israel are all culturally one block.
Ever so often when we don’t like each other as in 2003 when it was the Euros excommunicating us from their definition of what a civilized western nations is, we try to define things otherwise.
But it’s a Christian world, it is a world defined by a common set of philosophical ideas (Existentialism, Postmodernism, Deconstruction, Rationalism, Marxism, Nihilism...). Culturally, until this war, you saw a fluid exchange of ideas and sharing in the arts (architecture, painting, sculpture, music, dance, film, photography, literature). We are economically tied together and even the genealogy is tied.
We move as one block, culturally (with Russia being on the periphery and mostly on board but not entirely). For example, the Germans made fun of the LGBTQIA movement many years ago, and then 10 years later it was there too, in full force. They made fun of feminism before that, and then it was adopted there and as usually is the case, they take it to an extreme... Even France which tries hard to show they are different is really just part of that big western cultural block.
That is because we share the same news media, the same Internet, consume the same arts, and have the same religion more or less.
Yes, there is a Western culture and Russia is sort of part of it.
Ukraine was one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in Europe before the war. Many of the refugees who fled to Western Europe won’t want to return.

Bravo, I have known this for two decades. Anyone who thinks different, should have gone to Ukraine. The corruption permeates their whole society.
Everything about Ukraine stinks, everything.
Genocide -
The deliberate and systematic killing or persecution of a large number of people from a particular national or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.
******
Genocide? I don’t think so. Russia is not trying to kill (not its aim) all Ukrainians or wipe Ukraine off the map. Russia wants the Crimea back. Both claim it. So we have a war.
The Ibo and Yoruba people (of Nigeria) want to kill each other to extinction. That is genocide. The Palestinians want to kill all of the Jews and wipe Israel off the map. That is genocide.
It may very well result in the loss off too many Ukrainians or even the country (hopefully not), but that is not Russia’s “aim”. So, I would have to say no, I don’t think this is genocide.
Horrible waste of life.

Slavs don’t seem to care, they have history, borders, and honor to uphold.
500 hundred years from now they’ll be squabbling and fighting over the same real estate.
Once again childish taunts from a Russia lover. Who cares.
As it has an impact on many things, I have been hammering here and elsewhere that “demographics is destiny”.
It is critical for Europe and Russia.
“Ukraine was one of the poorest and most corrupt countries in Europe before the war.”
And yet they lead Russia in basic nitation services.

Russia is way worse. Barely beating Haiti and North Korea.

“Genocide? I don’t think so.”
According to the five-point definition under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Russia has demonstrated clear, notorious, and mounting evidence in all five criteria, even though only one must be fulfilled to qualify as genocide.

sure and how is the russian population?
Russia, like other developed countries, has a similar problem. But they are not nearly as bad as Ukraine’s. Just sayin’.
You don't have a reflection when you look in to a mirror?
plez define ‘not nearly as bad’
like Israel?
I suggest www.duckduckgo.com as a starting point for your research on comparative national population trends in the two countries.
