I have always been leery of people that treat animals better than people because they will naturally treat people worse than animals.

Understand perfectly well. People have a choice and free will. Animals often have no choice outside of basic instinct and survival. When given a choice, we often see animals chose compassion, but we often see humans choosing the opposite
