‘House Of David’ Just Knocked Down Amazon Prime Video’s Best Show
Forbes ^ | 03/10/2025 | Paul Tassi

Posted on 03/14/2025 7:08:36 AM PDT by Drew68

I wrote an article just last week about how House of David, the series with zero social media chatter, is quickly become a big hit for Amazon Prime Video, dipping into the seldom-tapped well of biblical adaptations, at least on streaming services.

When I touched on it last, I remarked that it was only behind Reacher and Invincible on Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 list, and there was no doubt it would stay there (which would still be extremely impressive).

Now? The House of David has actually moved up to #2, which has knocked down Invincible, and its perfect, 100%-scored season 3, to the #3 spot, despite airing what was easily one of its most intense episodes of all time this past week, with the finale arriving this week. This was also not the finale of House of David or anything, as the show still has four more episodes to go, including its two-part David versus Goliath finale, one of the most famous biblical face-offs.

House of David is now only behind Reacher, now in its third season, keeping it away from the #1 spot. I refuse to believe that no matter how popular House of David gets, it will be able to dethrone Reacher, which is such a widely-watched series it stays on Amazon Prime Video’s Top 10 list for almost the entire time between its seasons, which can be well over a year.

House of David seems spawned from the huge success of The Chosen, another Bible drama that has performed impressively across multiple seasons so far. Given the performance of that show and this one, I would expect more live-action adaptations to follow.

One question I have is…does anyone own the copyright to the Bible?

The Reacher books were excellent, except for the fact that the villain always ended up being a straight white male conservative free market businessman.

I gave up on the very good writing when I couldn’t stand the slant.

Exactly, Alan Ritchson looks attractive on the outside but can barely even act.

You are correct, he can’t act at all. This third season of Reacher is mind numbingly bad.

I’ve heard it mentioned, but haven’t watched any of it.

I also haven’t watched any of season 3 of Reacher, with Alan Ritchson being a complete douche canoe on his comments about conservatives, I don’t expect to give him any more views.

It’s fantastic. Christians can finally watch something and not cringe at the poor quality or blonde hair and blue eyed europeans playing jews.

It’s great.

This is from the description: “Born to Jesse and Nitzevet, David faced rejection due to questions about his legitimacy. Even his brothers shunned him, and his father kept him with the sheep. Yet this pain shaped him into someone who could empathize with others’ suffering.”

Where does the Bible say there is a question about his legitimacy?

"Up to episode 4. Was just about to start ep. 5."

Same here. I'm enjoying the series so far. Discovered last night that the actress Ayelet Zurer who is playing Queen Ahinoam is also appearing in Disney's Daredevil: Born Again, as Vanessa Fisk, wife of villain Wilson "Kingpin" Fisk. She was in the original Netflix Daredevil series as Vanessa Fisk too.

I have prime but being older and not being computer savvy (what is called intuitive is anything but that to us) I’ve yet to figure out how to get the picture. I can get the sound but not the picture. I did buy the DVD of the first season of “Sneaky Pete” and liked that.

I also recommend ‘The Storyteller: Greek Myths’ on Amazon. A quick way to learn the stories.

Occasionally this happens on my Roku box. I can usually fix it by restarting the box from the menu or if this doesn’t work, uninstalling and reinstalling whatever app is giving me trouble.

= = =

Not the text.

But if you repackage it, with pictures, commentary, maps, etc. then that is copyrightable.

Also depends on the version. The old ones KJV for example are past the date for copyright. But new translations are ‘different’ and can be copyrighted.

Hmmm. Ask some Jew if their scrolls of the OT are copyrighted? The scribes spend a lot of time copying them and don’t seem to get lawsuit problems. (They just get called out by Jesus).

Yeah. That’s completely stupid. I hope that’s the worst it gets. I’m waiting until some more episodes pop out, and we will probably watch as a family after that.
The YouTube channel “Wretched” certainly doesn’t like this show or The Chosen for its made up extra Biblical content.

“However, did start watching Reacher. So preposterous I could not even get thru Episode 1”

i assume you’re talking about season 3; season 1 was tolerable ...

however, season 2 was one of the absolute worst, most ridiculous shows ever ... i’m pretty sure we never finished the season ... as you say, wooden “acting”, ridiculous dialog, disjointed story-telling, and in every situation, every character would ALWAYS make take the stupidest possible action and/or make the stupidest possible decision ...

this show had to be written by 20-something year olds that knew absolutely nothing about anything ... [my favorite example of stupidity was when Reacher drowned one of the bad-guy minions in a pool of LIQUID concrete one night that had been poured the day before ... i think that’s when i quit watching]

I don’t think I’ll be watching it. I don’t like programs that take liberty with Bible text.

I read in reviews elsewhere that the show draws more from Jewish texts than from the Bible.

These shows are “Bible” based but are not the “Bible” and they tell you that before each episode.

This. They're trying to reach a wide audience. Plus, how much dialogue is there in the Bible about David? Enough to fill 8 hour-long episodes (and probably more seasons as well?)

What I appreciate is that they've managed to make a well-produced, entertaining show that isn't cringy and doesn't insult people of faith.

Anyhow, this is the disclaimer at the beginning of each episode. I get it.

Oops. Meant to ping you above.

Don't know who Liberty Lady is but apparently she has an active account so she got pinged as well!

I'm generally of the opinion that conservatives are not particularly good in the realm of entertainment. I watched three episodes of this without even realized it was show-run by a Christian production company. At which point, I looked it up, "This show is too good to have Ned Flanders at the helm." I was wrong.

I will also add that the two actresses who play Saul's daughters are stunningly beautiful. Welsh/Sri Lankan Indy Lewis as Michal and, in particular, Israeli actress Yali Topol Margalith as Merab (lots of Israelis in the cast, for obvious reasons).

David is played by the Egyptian-born, American-raised actor Michael Iskander in his first film role (he previously did some Broadway).

Anyhow, it's just refreshing to have something like this that is actually faith-based and watchable. Kudos to Jon Erwin and also to Amazon for giving it a platform. Surely the high ratings will ensure more such quality programming.

David’s huge and dysfunctional family should provide a lot of fodder for a show.
