Schumer has presided over three days of wrenching debate among Senate Democrats over their political quandary. Many senators argued passionately against voting for the Republican funding bill, which passed the House with just one Democratic vote earlier this week. They pointed out that the funding bill lacks directives included in regular appropriations bills that dictates how money can be spent, which would enable President Donald Trump and Elon Musk to lay off government workers and seek to eliminate programs without congressional input.

House Democrats said they had called their senators to urge them to vote against the bill, outraged that their colleagues in the Senate might support a bill that they believe will enrage their liberal base and hurt heir ability push back against Republican plans, according to lawmakers who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyoming) took to the Senate floor on Thursday to remind senators that Schumer warned in 2019 that shutting down the government over policy differences “accomplishes nothing but pain and suffering for the country and incurs an enormous political cost to the party shutting it down.” Now Schumer is trying to lead Senate Democrats “over the cliff and hurt the American public in the process,” Barrasso said.

SNIP

The party controls the White House, the Senate and the House. A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday found that 32 percent of registered voters would blame Democrats in Congress for a shutdown, 31 percent would blame Republicans in Congress and 22 percent would blame Trump.

I think the title shows that WAPO is advocating in favor of 'shutdown'.

How humiliating for the RATs to grandstand that they were not going to support “Trump’s budget” and then later that same day fully reverse course.

Beautiful!!

Today the Democrats acted like congressional Republicans—pumped up their base and then stabbed them in the back.

Lol.

It’s up to the Senate to pass the bill and get it to President Donald Trump’s desk before the 11:59 p.m. deadline on Friday.

Don’t care if the gummit shuts down or not, I might care if 1,000,000 worthless employees were trimmed off for good. Might make a difference then.

Trump is the one with all the momentum. Shut down the government, he might lose his momentum.

Article 1 says that no money can be spent that was not approved by Congress.

Nothing in Article 2 says that the President has to spend money.

This is kind of the best of both worlds. If the democrats get most of the blame, that is a plus. And honestly, once most of America realizes life doesn’t end because some fat, lazy bureaucrat doesn’t get a paycheck, the real cuts will begin.

If the CR is approved, then Article 1 is fulfilled. The money will have been approved by Congress. Normally appropriations bills dictate how the money can be spent, but this one does not.

I’d love for the shutdown to happen. Then Trump can provide essential services and show nothing more is needed. Then fire them all!

Schumer caved. He’s now supporting the CR.

Here's my best gut feeling of what happened behind closed doors. As Minority Leader....and under the strong leadership of Majority Leader Thune, Schumer has been reduced to a "has been". And can't do all those wonderful "pay offs" to other Senators and their causes.

And they went after Schumer...and told him so...IMOW...."Look Old Man...You think you're going to come up with some Grand Plan which the Republicans will support. You're on your way out...most of us are not...we'll support it."

Democrats must know this: If they side with Trump then Trump wins. If they shut down the government, then Trump wins.

I would rather see it shut down and let Trump and Musk run wild with their cuts.
