US long-range bombs headed to Ukraine as ATACMS supply dwindles

The U.S. is poised to resume shipments to Ukraine of long-range bombs known as Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB), after they were upgraded to better counter Russian jamming, two people familiar with the weapon told Reuters.

The munitions will arrive amid reports that Ukraine's supply of similarly-ranged Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) has been depleted.

-snip-

President Donald Trump's administration agreed on Tuesday to resume military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine after Kyiv said it was ready to support Washington's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire with Russia.

In recent weeks, 19 GLSDBs were test-fired to assess the effectiveness of the upgrades. Part of the modifications involved reinforcing connections within the weapon to enhance its resilience, the people said.

The reintroduction of the GLSDB onto the battlefield could occur in the coming days, as a stockpile is already present in Europe. The last time Ukrainians used the weapons was months ago, one of the people said.

Russian jamming had kept many of Ukraine's relatively new long-range GLSDBs from hitting their intended targets, three people familiar with the challenges told Reuters last May.

It’s a standard GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bomb attached to an M26 rocket motor.

Yes, that’s correct. It also proves the Ukrainians aren’t able to fly those fancy aircraft the West gave them and fire them from the air.

See, this is where some understanding of the situation is required.

- What are you going to level them with? Only a few Russian assets have a decent chance of getting through, and that is with a saturation attack.
- You have limited resources - what are you going to forgo attacking for the sake of your gesture?
- You have to plan to get them past Uke air defense. Most missiles don’t get through. Hence saturation attacks.

Gestures like you are asking for are expensive.

Trump’s NSA Mike Waltz announced the resumption of military aid and intelligence sharing 2 days ago when Ukraine agreed to ceasefire. Sources on the ground in Rzeszow Poland have confirmed new aid flowing into Ukraine.

SDB’s are mainly obsolete in the face of modern SAM defenses - unless you can use an F35 to drop them. They are small and fit in an F35 shielded internal bomb bay. The US made tons of them in the 2000’s. There are better stand-off weapons now. Hence they are surplus in the USAF.

The “fancy aircraft” the Ukes now have are 1980’s models with 1990s upgrades, secondhand from various Euro countries. Whats this “fancy”?

“Bombs are dropped from airplanes. Munitions shot from the ground are called missile, not bombs.”

This is so easy and fun at the same time.

Sad Marcus. let’s all give him a shoulder to cry on. LOL!

I don’t think they’re fancy myself, but there sure was a lot made over them. The F-16s were touted as “real game changers” — remember? Now they’re gushing about the Mirage 2000s.

We’ve been through a long list of “game changing” Wunderwaffen.

I accept your explanation. Thanks for the information, which clarifies that they are indeed missiles now, not the bombs they originally were before the transformation process was performed. 🙂👍

Only took them 3 YEARS to figure out that GPS can be jammed.

“but there sure was a lot made over them. “

Which is why you should look up information for yourself.

The F-16s were supposed to relieve the Patriot missile shortage in opposing Russian saturation attacks. They did help there. The Mirage 2000’s were an emergency measure for when the US turned off the F16 jammers.
