The Trump administration is placing more restrictions on Russia's oil, gas and banking sectors by further restricting Russian access to U.S. payment systems, according to four people familiar with the plans.
The Treasury Department on Wednesday let lapse a 60-day exemption put in place by the Biden administration in January that allowed specific energy transactions involving sanctioned Russian banks to continue. By letting the waiver lapse, the banks may no longer access U.S. payment systems to conduct major energy transactions.
The Russian financial institutions that had been exempt from sanctions included Vnesheconombank, Bank Financial Corporation Otkritie, Sovcombank, Sberbank, VTB Bank, Alfa-Bank, Rosbank, Bank Zenit, Bank Saint-Petersburg and the Central Bank of Russia.
The decision to further restrict access to American banking systems makes it harder for other countries to buy Russian oil, thus limiting its global supply.

I’d be curious where the American Ukrainian community stand on all this? Can’t be happy with Trump. But the Ukraine did sort of bring this on themselves by cozying up to Biden.
Many Ukrainians recognize their corrupt government and the disregard for Ukrainian lives.
They want this war to end even if they need to lose some land occupied by mostly pro-Russian Ukrainians
I doubt this claim. Press trying to send Russia lies to not help peace to take hold.
How long before some asswipe judge says he can’t?
Biden’s exemption expired today and President Trump didn’t renew it.
Moscow mayor’s wife’s bribes to Hunter Biden was still paying dividends.
Moscow mayor’s wife’s bribes to Hunter Biden was still paying dividends.
So many Ukrainians are dead before their time. There are definitely less around today to answer that question. If the dead could talk I wonder what they would say about ending this war.
Totally irrelevant. That doesn't mean that Trump is going to place tougher sanctions upon Russia, especially as he tries to obtain a cease fire agreement.
The only thing that makes sense is that CBS is lying yet again for the detriment of the peace process. They want a World War that will involve nuclear weapons being deployed to eliminate large swathes of human lives. These people are all insane.
30 years deep. Gimme a holler.
Heads up. CNBC radio if you can find the interview.
Interviewed Scott Sheffield, former owner/CEO of Pioneer Natural Resources — sold some time ago to Exxon.
The quotes were something like this:
“People are completely oblivious to what is happening in US shale. Pioneer’s Tier 1 inventory will be gone by 2027. Tier 2 by 2032. The good spots are drilled and done.”
The various people then weighed in with their talk of Twilight in US Shale (a takeoff of Twilight in the Desert, the book about Saudi Arabia not being infinite.
It being CNBC, much of it was focused on oil price and influence thereof. A few noted that it is about 10X more important than oil price.
By allowing the exemption to lapse, the sanctions became a bit tighter. I doubt this was a mistake or oversight. The sanction loophole was intended to allow existing transactions to clear. Extending it would have been seen as fealty to Putin. This, along with his resuming military aid shipments and intelligence sharing, helps Trump look a little more serious about pushing both sides to the bargaining table.
But the headline is misleading for a reason, as many, including me react to the headline. Especially coming from certain posters who have a history of posting BS articles.
So, I admit my guilt in not reading beyond the headline.
Unfortunately, media on both sides try to twist stories to further their agenda. It seems with headlines in particular, this has become an accepted practice throughout the media. Trump probably doesn’t mind this one, as it’s a lot better than the “Trump is a Russian asset” crap that many in the media are pushing.
At this point, I treat ALL media with skepticism and scrutiny, even when they seem to support my worldview.
