On Thursday Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed tentative support for U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. This comes amid ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict that has persisted since Russia’s invasion in 2022.
During a news conference at the Kremlin alongside Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin acknowledged Russia’s agreement “in principle” to the U.S.-proposed ceasefire. However, he stressed the necessity of addressing the “root causes” of the crisis to ensure a lasting peace.
Putin stated that several details need to be sorted out before finalizing the ceasefire agreement. “The idea [of a ceasefire] itself is correct and we are certainly supporting it, but there are issues that need to be discussed,” he said, according to an NBC translation.
“I think that we need to talk to our American colleagues and partners. Maybe call President Trump and discuss it together.”
“But we support the very idea of ending this conflict through peaceful means.” Putin added that any deal must “proceed from the fact that this cessation should be such that it would lead to long-term peace and eliminate the root causes of this crisis.”
When asked about the 30-day ceasefire deal brokered by the White House, he responded, “We are in favor of it but there are nuances.”
Putin also raised concerns about how the 30-day period would be used, questioning whether it would serve to “supply weapons” or “train newly mobilized units” and how ceasefire violations would be monitored.
On Tuesday, Zelenskyy agreed to a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire with Russia, aiming to halt the ongoing conflict that began in 2022. The decision followed extensive discussions between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia. In response, the United States resumed military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
President Trump, who has been vocal about his intentions to broker peace in the region, expressed his optimism regarding Russia’s response to the ceasefire proposal. Following discussions with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump conveyed his hope that Russia would “do the right thing” in response to the ceasefire initiative.
Reuters reported that Trump described Putin’s statement as “very promising” but “not complete.” He also expressed willingness to speak with the Russian president to secure a ceasefire.
THE “ROOT CAUSE” IS THE STATEMENTS BY PUTIN THAT HE WISHED TO “CONSOLIDATE” THE ORIGINAL SOVIET UNION BEFORE HE DIES.
This what Putin agreed to according to his statement: “We agree with the proposals for the ceasefire, but our position is based on the assumption that the ceasefire would lead to a longterm peace, something that would remove the initial reasons for the crisis.”
All the posturing is for negotiating.
Put an agreed upon billion dollar fine (held in escrow') on any country shipping weapons to the Z Man and you might have a point. Ukraine's a corrupt country that helps 'the elites' of the world. A group not the least bit trustworthy.
There would have to be a serious agreement to an agreement to even start a ceasefire. How about a 14 day ceasefire that can be renewed or not? And everything's on the table.
Would you also have Russia close down all of its military factories during the same period?
"“We also want guarantees that Ukraine will not mobilize, train soldiers, or receive weapons during the 30-day cease-fire,”
What he actually has agreed to is more discussions. That's it. Compared to what the headline claims, that's worlds apart.
Uh..wut?
Good luck getting every single country in the world that could possibly send weapons to Ukraine to put a billion dollars into escrow.
The goal of the ceasefire is to freeze all action and violence and NOT allow either side to take advantage of the peace effort.
Russia could not resupply their lines and NATO could not sneak in weapons for the Z Man. Both sides could treat their soldiers for injuries. If a solid outline for peace can’t be created in 14 days... then 60 or 90 days probably wouldn’t work either. IMHO
Bingo. That's why NATO membership is so important to him. He doesn't fear a NATO invasion, and never did. It's that once a country is a member of NATO, he can't invade it without risking a much wider war he doesn't want.
Agreed.
And what do you define as the lines? You called for blocking all weapons to the entire country of Ukraine, not just the front lines. Would Russia also have to close down its factories during the cease fire?
He's open to the idea if certain conditions are met.
“What he actually has agreed to is more discussions. That’s it. Compared to what the headline claims, that’s worlds apart.”
Yes, that is what I said.
Headlines, anymore, rarely hit it.
