The Sorry State of U.S. Cities Is a Choice—A Really Bad One

The Greater Tokyo Area contains around 40 million people—roughly as many residents as in the entire state of California—all living within a region the size of Los Angeles County. Tokyo runs amazingly well for such a mammoth urban environment. Transportation is world class. The neighborhoods offer numerous cultural amenities, small businesses galore, and loads of affordable food. The streets are simultaneously busy and surprisingly quiet, all within a short walk. Crime is low. There are few destitute people on the streets. Residents are exceedingly polite, and the entire city is incredibly clean.

All true-I've been there.

I'd start with the empty high-rises. Put working illegals there in bunk-style housing. They'll have access to work without the need for their own vehicles. Send their kids home while they work 6-10 months a year. Make them 'volunteer' to be guardian angels 8 hours per week on the subways, thereby making the streets safer. They would be very welcome to the leftist locals.

Tokyo has a secret....

The Japanese people.

They are very law abiding and civilized.

Some call it race, some call it culture.

At the end of the day it does not matter—chicken and egg issue.

This was my idea for the homeless on an earlier post.
Liberal ‘solutions’ tend to involve warehousing solutions whether it be covid confinement or being treated like cattle at TSA checkpoints. Since these people(+ vagrants) are breaking the law to begin with I see no problem ‘rounding them up’ and administering them in a way that’s more orderly like Tokyo. ‘Orderly’ mmigrants would have to carry cards.

Those high-rises could have separate floors to give medical attention and cafeteria-style dining.

**The Japanese people. They are very law abiding and civilized.**

Doable here. New Yorkers were like that under Giuliani. It takes intolerance-the kind leftists hate.

There you go trying to put lipstick on the pig of illegal immigration. They’ve all got to go home.

Socialism always fails.

The problem is it often takes so long to run out of other peoples money and to run down what other people built, that often people don’t make the connection to socialism as the cause of the failure.

Socialism never builds anything, so the infrastructure nearly always decays that someone else originally built. Given enough time things collapse.

They are also not diverse and like it that way. They don’t have a diverse underclass with perpetual grievances.

Deporting illegals and allowing them temporary work visas like the Brassaro Plan would work. It could prime the pump for the cities to come alive again. It’s the workers we need, not the families who use our resources like health care and schools.

The Braserro program worked for the farmers. Suburban communities would then follow the lead of the cities. The need for these foreign workers would fluctuate. A ‘program’ could stay on top of it.

The good news is that the self-deportees are willing to go along as they don’t want to jeopardize their hopes of returning. They’ll play the game unlike the democrats.

Big American cities are trash. So disappointing. Trashy and dangerous.

Nice article, but truth be told, one can succinctly summarize as follows: US cities suck because of Democrats.

I would argue its NOT “a choice.”

Americans in blue cities have almost zero choice. The only choice is to flee and live elsewhere.

Look at States like California or New York - permanent, one party states, seemingly completely disconnected from the political will of American as a whole. How does that happen?

How American cities are run is foisted upon its citizens, but a small group of leftists/marxists, who control the politics, and most importantly, the printed, fiat money, taxes and debt spending.

They propagandize the citizenry into believing they are being either enlightened, or racist, or greedy - and convince them to go against their own interests.

**There you go trying to put lipstick on the pig of illegal immigration. They’ve all got to go home.**
It’s happening now. Holman’s not messin’ around. Most have something to offer so we should leave open the door to their return without their kids who we might need some day under the right conditions the rats won’t agree with.

**Socialism never builds anything, so the infrastructure always decays that someone else originally built. Given enough time things collapse.**

Infrastructure-the interstate highway system paid dividends. So did the internet. What needs to be avoided are projects like the Big Dig and the Calif. high-speed rail. Hopefully the right-of-ways will be maintained. The future may call for it just like the kids of the temporary workers.

SF-Caltrain never expanded the line to go downtown-smart. These projects need to be built like the Rollman Skating Rink Trump got done-doable. The left will never give thanks.

And it only took a Little Boy and a Fat Man, and about 75 years for it to get that way.

Japan ain’t Utopia.
Don’t fall for the trope.

Japan may not be Utopia—but Japanese cities compared to US cities speaks for itself.

A great place to visit but not live. It’s like the rats. They have a good idea from time to time. What I’m saying is that we could learn a thing or two from how others do things.

Post Office doing the census thereby saving billions. Find a way to get it right.
New Zealand-I saw a bus driver toss a newspaper out the window. Delivered to a remote farm.
Japan-kitchen is adjacent to the bathrooms-less plumbing. Hot water on demand was around 40 years before us.

Conclusion-diversity is a strength.

Diversity has strengths and weaknesses.

We are all very familiar with both.

“ Japan ain’t Utopia”

I have a friend who is a top flight lawyer for a refining company there. Mother was an American doctor, white, father a Japanese doctor. Born and raised in Japan. Looks Japanese to me. Went to top Japanese schools. Pretty wealthy.

He has Japanese citizenship and name. Served in their pseudo-military. No accent.

He says he is regularly barred from public establishments as a “foreigner”. Apparently there is a little sign that indicates “no foreigners”. This is common.
