The hidden dangers of a little-known additive in a popular children's drink have been revealed after experts issued an alarming health warning.
Called glycerol, the super-sweet substance is a common ingredient in 'slushies' β bright, colourful ice cold drinks that are a mainstay at cinemas and corner shops.
But medics have warned the beverages can trigger a potentially deadly condition called 'intoxication syndrome' in some children.
Here, MailOnline details exactly why the sweetener is so dangerous for small bodies, and how it can trigger a lethal drop of blood sugar within minutes, with fatal consequences.
Experts have warned that just one 350ml drink, about as much as can of Coca Cola, could be enough to cause problems in children under four.
In youngsters aged five to ten, one and a half of these drinks can have dangerous effects, if consumed quickly.
Doctors yesterday blamed slushies for a spate of 21 hospitalisations in children who needed medical care within an hour of consuming the drinks.
And last year, they were held responsible for almost killing two children aged three and four.

Made to appeal to kids.
So ban them too.
It’s been years, I don’t miss the slushy headache.
Clickbaity title.
Young skulls full of slush. /s
Good thing I only filled up my Quik-Trip 44oz cup with Pepsi last night (I wanted Coke but the place I went only had Pepsi)
THOUGH Quik-Trip has everything - I originally got Dr. Pepper with a few splashes of Fanta Strawberry (I think it was Fanta)

BURP
Hey I didn’t drink it all in one sitting - 3/4 still in the fridge for lunch tomorrow
Hamburger, Pinto beans, bacon in taco shells with a bit of guacamole - Lord willing!
For taco meat, I use ground hamburger, salt, pepper, garlic salt, onion powder - once it starts turning brown, stir in Pace Picante (non-chunky medium)
Oh.....I laid down a couple of teaspoons of cold bacon grease that I saved from frying up bacon - to grease the warming pan - though I drain most (not all) of the grease before adding the Pace Picante
OH YEAH!
Does Kennedy know about this?
I survived slushies as did everyone I’ve ever known.
That’s what I was thinking, that slishies have been around forever! Why are they only finding this out now?

A warm, soft pretzel, and a 50/50 cherry/Coke mix at the little Kmart food stand near the exit was well with the risk to my younger self.
I think that’s a Sno-cone...not a Slushie.
See, this is why I preferred safe and sane Icees when I was a kid (OK, it was really because they have a unique βbiteβ to them that slushes never did).
...and all I’d get would be Taco Bell?
A snow cone is not a slushy. Read the article.
Absolutely! As kids, it was always a treat. I know all of us kids would get them as much as our parents allowed. They were yummy. Today, Iβd never have one. But those were the days.
I am wondering if the slushies we grew up with were just old fashioned sugar syrup and these are a chemical brew
what is acceptable as food ingredients has drastically changed
Kind of makes one wonder who owns the FDA - they seem to have been approving a LOT of poisons over the years...
came up under a “slushy” search.
That’s going to end if it hasn’t already
