President Donald Trump has long been able to bend Republican lawmakers to his will with a single online post. The mere hint of a threat that he might announce a member “SHOULD BE PRIMARIED” is enough to bring most GOP members into line.
Not Rep. Thomas Massie.
The 54-year-old former robotics engineer brushed aside that precise threat from Trump Monday night, even with the president vowing to “lead the charge” against him after Massie made clear that he would not vote for the Trump-blessed spending bill pushed by House Republican leaders.
Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Massie met the threat with a bemused shrug and a well-practiced joke about the situation: “He’s going after Canada and me today. The difference is Canada will eventually cave.”

I think he should run for Senate ...
At best you can say he is ineffective.
“Trump wants to end this GOP maverick’s political career. He’s not too worried”
He will be - I suspect that if most of his voters have to choose between Trump or him, they’ll choose Trump...unless they’re really, really, weird.
“At best you can say he is ineffective.”
He’s very effective and successful when it comes to his position of Attention Whore.
Philosophically Massie is fine.
But he doesn’t play well with others and legislatures are team sports.
That’s true he never votes on a team basis
Let him run for Senate and have James Smith (former Cynthiana mayor) take his House seat. Smith is a team player which is good in the House, and Massie can stand for his principles in the Senate.
Massie is a bit of a showboat. Like Trey Gowdy he talks a good game but that’s about it.
If Congress were just a pageant for displaying one’s “principles”, he’d be in great shape.
But far too much of the lives of 330 million Americans depend on it. There’s got to be a mix of pragmatism in there as well.
I thought McCain was the anointed “maverick”?!
There’s a saying...
“Out of the fryer into the frying pan”
He can cause the leadership more issues in the Senate :)
Massie was also one of a handful of House Republicans who endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida during the 2024 GOP presidential primary, and he has declined to formally endorse Trump since Trump secured the party’s nomination.
Trump won Massie’s Congressional District in 2024 with 67% to 31%. Given the importance of the vote on the budget, Massie should have been a team player. He has voted for such bills in the past. There are also other votes that he has cast that are controversial. Just another grandstander.
Trump needs to try even if it is not likely to work. Republicans who don’t believe that the perfect is the enemy of the good, who pursue rule or ruin, or who won’t reward a step in the right direction even though it doesn’t go all the way, need to feel the heat.
The Senate will suit him I think. He can make his speeches on the floor and take stands.
With his friend Rand Paul
LOL do you think Trump is really going to KY to campaign against a House member .. I doubt it...
Do you think - on the other hand - spending at Biden and COVID levels is justified ?
That’s’ what it is and what he’s against
The Senate is even more collegial—and at this point I don’t think he’s earned a promotion.
Massie would have more company in the Senate. He and Rand could be a force.
