Rent first. Don’t buy anything. Try it out for a year.

Ching Mai is a good place.
Bangkok can be OK depending on who you are.

In Thailand, foreign nationals are not allowed to buy. Or didn’t used to be. You had to rent

Just travel there on vacation a few more times.

I had a friend who bought a condo there. Learn about property rights for foreigners. I have heard foreigners owning property outright is very complex and corrupt

Yeah, absolutely great advice. Frankly, not planning to buy anyway. Weโ€™ll lease and leave the country long enough to stay legal and return. Cheap flights to most of the rest of Asia are a bonus. We plan to spend the burning season (Feb/Mar/April) somewhere else.

Last I heard, you can buy a condo, just not land.

You can start a Thai Corporation and the Corporation can own land.

Just what I heard when I was there.

Obviously. Iโ€™m here to view the opinions of others to expand my knowledge. Anything wrong with that? Why are you on here? Iโ€™m genuinely curious given your response to my post ๐Ÿ™‚

Living in a country not your own is a risk.

You are there as a guest and at any time they can decide they do not want you there for any and no reason. Some times they will let you take your belonging with you, some times they won't.

So general tips for living overseas, always have an exit strategy and always have at least one but preferable three local (not ex-pat local) groups that you have made friends with. Religious, hobby and low level law enforcement is the best combo. They will give you a heads up if trouble is on the way.

Learn the language, as much as you can and learn the customs, always be polite and respectful (that is why you learn the customs) and never say, well WE do it some other way.

Hope everything goes well for you.

Well the Khao Soi should be good. Nice little joint over-looking a village 30 miles outside Chang Mai: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVeY00ApNbY
