7 Things You Should Never Clean With A Magic Eraser

Magic Erasers are, well, magic. They help you tackle the toughest cleaning tasks with less scrubbing than most other tools. According to T.J. Liles, vice president of Maid Brigade in Atlanta, Georgia, this is because “Magic Erasers are made from melamine foam, which is highly abrasive and porous, and a built-in cleaning agent.”

If it’s so effective, what’s the problem, right? “The abrasiveness can be too harsh for more sensitive surfaces,” he explains. Basically, they can work too well and scrub off entire finishes before you know it. That’s why, if you have any doubt, Liles recommends testing on a small, inconspicuous spot first. You can also keep this as your handy guide for what to avoid cleaning with a Magic Eraser.

Well, that about does it. The surfaces you most need to clean with a magic eraser are not good candidates.

It basically rubs the surface away, which is how it works.

There are reports that the residue left in the immediate environment is hazardous, too.

I learned the hard way years ago that despite its ability to get a whiteboard back to, well, white, it makes it unusable going forward. Hard whiteboard stains come off pretty well with either rubbing alcohol or diluted vinegar.

Alternatively, pro tip, for whiteboard markings that are hard to clean, try re-drawing over them with a whiteboard marker. The hard tip will pull up old ink and wipe clean like it was never there.

Magic erasers are great for cleaning grout.

I use one to remove wax from automobile plastic trim. About 10 years ago my son bought a used truck, the previous owner was a little reckless when he waxed it. All the black trim had wax streaks on it. Magic Eraser took it off.

So the wife using it to bathe me is not a good idea? I was wondering why she was being nice to me for a change.

Don’t use spot remover on your dog. The dog might disappear.

I tried using it on soap scum on a porcelain tub. Nothing came off, at least not without a lot of intense scrubbing. The same amount I have to do with conventional cleaning agents.

I’ve generally found this product to be useless.

[...soap scum...]

Dawn dish soap works well. I have also had luck with degreasers like mean green or purple power. A brush works better than a sponge or scrub pad which get clogged up while cleaning.

Denatured alcohol for whiteboards works best.

For soap scum, I wet the surface to be cleaned, apply the foaming bubble cleaner. Then I scrup with dawn dishsoap platinum, degreaser using a hard bristle brush with a handle. The handle is so I don’t have to bend over for a long time. That combination of cleaner and tool makes cleaning the bathtub easier.

So magic erasers should come with a warning lable?

I'll add the Dyson ball cleaner is a terrible misnomer also. So... What else is new?

“There are reports that the residue left in the immediate environment is hazardous, too.“

I tried using one of them once, for a few seconds, and there was some extremely offensive SOMETHING I couldn’t wash off of my hands not to mention a harsh chemical taste in my mouth. I won’t go near the damn things.

- Delicate Surfaces (like stainless steel(???))

Think the doors of your refrigerator stainless steel.

The surface has a specific and uniform grain buffed into it at the factory, but a magic eraser will create its own grain and you'll see the rub spot for the rest of the life of the appliance.

Unless you carefully use the magic eraser on the entire door surface, creating a new pattern.

Its also what made a Delorean (and I suppose a Cybertruck) so hard to maintain.
