Trump puts new limits on Elon Musk

President Donald Trump convened his Cabinet in person on Thursday to deliver a message: You’re in charge of your departments, not Elon Musk.

According to two administration officials, Trump told top members of his administration that Musk was empowered to make recommendations to the departments but not to issue unilateral decisions on staffing and policy. Musk was also in the room.

The meeting followed a series of mass firings and threats to government workers from the billionaire Tesla founder, who helms the Department of Government Efficiency, that created broad uncertainty across the federal government and its workforce.

DOGE’s actions have faced ferocious resistance in court and criticism from Democratic lawmakers and some Republicans.

Dems attack Elon Musk after DOGE gains access to sensitive data

The president’s message represents the first significant move to narrow Musk’s mandate. According to Trump’s new guidance, DOGE and its staff should play an advisory role — but Cabinet secretaries should make final decisions on personnel, policy and the pacing of implementation.

Musk joined the conversation and indicated he was on board with Trump’s directive. According to one person familiar with the meeting, Musk acknowledged that DOGE had made some missteps — a message he shared earlier this week with members of Congress.

Trump stressed that he wants to keep good people in government and not to eject capable federal workers en masse. But his administration has in recent weeks fired tens of thousands of federal workers across numerous agencies in a series of blanket terminations. A federal judge and the chair of a federal civil service board have both concluded that the terminations were not tied to performance issues — and may have violated civil service laws.

Post office is tricky in that it is in the Constitution. Not sure how it would be structured for it to be other than an inefficient monopoly as it is now—or as is other public utilities. Multiple competitive bids to current courier services might make sense.

It is the law of power in any large hierarchical organization.

Praises and punishments must come through clear lines of authority in the various divisions and departments. This is especially true when layoffs and firings are required.

President Trump is making a proper correction to implement recommendations from DOGE into the rest of the Federal bureaucracy. This will improve the speed and compliance responses from the organizations that remain in service.

It will not slow down the DOGE investigations in any way.

This wanton firings carnage is an absolute joke.

It was and is exactly what is necessary to get the bureaucrats' attention and compliance.

I’ve assumed all along that Musk only made recommendations, and DOGE didn’t do the deed. Guess I was wrong.

Bannon was joyful about this. He despises Musk, and has for a very long time.

I think Trump was making it clear to his department heads that they would bear the responsibility for their decisions, not Musk.

Management 101.

Musk did an invaluable public service in his “slash and burn” approach to the imbedded bureaucrats. He has already cleaned out a lot of the deadbeats and deadwood. The department heads should be able to take it from here.

In my opinion, his team is still needed in ferreting out the financial waste, fraud, and abuse that is burying us in a sea of debt.

Bannon is jealous. I would not be surprised if he is the “source” for these nonsensical stories about Musk.

There is a reason Trump is not using him this term. People need to stop worshiping him and start thinking.

It has nothing to do with Musk. It has to do with getting thing through Congress.

The President is going to need Congress start doing some of the lifting.

It appears this is in the works since Musk met with GOP Senators and they came out of the meeting recommending the President send them a rescission bill to codify into Law some of the recommendation DOGE has come up with.

Normally bills are written by lobbyists and staff.

This works.
