Lithuania announced on Thursday that it has withdrawn from an international convention banning the use of cluster bombs.
The formerly Soviet-ruled Baltic state of 2.8 million people has also signalled its intention to leave another international treaty prohibiting the use of anti-personnel land mines, News.Az reports, citing AFP.
NATO member Lithuania has said it wants to strengthen its defences following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, fearing it could be next if Moscow succeeds.
The Lithuanian parliament voted to leave the cluster munitions convention last July, but the cvountry had to wait six months after submitting exit documents to the UN for the decision to take full effect.
It is the first country to leave the convention, which was adopted in 2008, and the first European Union country to leave a multilateral arms regulation agreement.

Lithuania has every reason to fear Moscow.
Sadly, mines and cluster munitions are an essential part of defensive warfare, nations having to protect themselves from invading hordes need them.
I am fine with this.
Good for them.
L
I gotta go do stuff.
Russians will just go through Belarus.
Neutron bomb. Remember that?
I’m just burning doin’ the neutron dance.
Little Lithuania has no choice, with a population of just under 3 million and a nearly 300 mile border with Russia. They have to make up for their defensive deficits somehow.
I think it was YouTube poster William Spaniel who presented an analysis of countries that had banned cluster bombs. He pointed out that they either didn’t have any already or were not in a likely location, like New Zealand, where they would ever be used. So, more useless virtue signaling.
I love his Indepth analysis. Here’s a link.

Don’t blame them in the least. Such a treaty wouldn’t stop Russia from using cluster munitions against Lithuania, and mines benefit the defender more than the attacker.
I remember superhero Jimmy Neutron.
“”””Neutron bomb. Remember that?””””
Yes, it was important since we would be fighting the Russian hordes after they invaded into our side’s cities and countryside.
Good for them. Go with mines, too. If dumdums are not OK, go back to using them. Use whatever you have to in order to protect your forces.
Does that justify gases? Oh, don’t be an idiot. Gases disperse with the wind and kill everything. Bombs/mines kill only in a specific area and that area does not move around.
Oh, oh, oh; and I can hear the whingers going on about some kiddie finding one. Yeah. Just like some kiddie finding Daddy’s gun in the house or wandering into traffic. Raise your kid responsibly.
So, it was all posturing and virtue signaling, I guess...
Never take any option off of the table.
Ukraine is a signatory of the landmine treaty. It does not seem to have prevented their use of them in the current conflict.
After their nation was invaded they informed the other signatories that they were changing in some areas of the purely voluntary agreement.
