If Donald Trump wants a 51st state to the north, here’s how he can get one.
For weeks, President Donald Trump has said that Canada should be America’s 51st state. He has mocked Canada’s economic dependence on the United States. He has condemned Canadian tariffs and trade restrictions. He has scolded Canada’s free riding on American defense. He has knocked Canada’s porous borders and drug dens. He has accused Canada of colluding with hostile foreign powers and global institutions. He has trolled our prime minister.
It’s delightful. Many Canadians are enjoying the show.
Up here in the cold white north, Trump has set the cat among the pigeons. Canada’s chattering classes are wringing their hands and gnashing their teeth. He has challenged their sense of entitlement. He has exposed their patriotism of convenience and knee-jerk anti-Americanism. He has exposed their haughty righteousness. He has identified rot that Canadian leaders refuse to acknowledge.
Here is some friendly advice for the president. The 51st state will not be Canada. The Canadian political establishment, largely centered in Ontario and Quebec, will fight it tooth and nail. Their vested interests depend upon the existing federal order of things. Big fish in small ponds will steadfastly refuse to abandon the pond. Canada will not join the United States as a single unit.
But the country’s provinces are a different matter. Some parts of Canada might be persuaded, one or two at a time, to come stateside. If there is to be a 51st state from north of the border, the best bet is Alberta. Even better would be to adopt two provinces, Alberta and Newfoundland, to start.
Canada has always been an unlikely country. It looks huge on the map, but most of its people live in a ribbon from east to west

Of all the provenances, Albertans might be the ones that could be swung conservative. Right now, although claiming conservative, they are politically European style conservative.
But, it is their choice.
It’d be better if that country held another separation vote to get the eastern provenances out. The last failed by less than 1% which nobody here seems to know.
I can see the U.S. expanding to include all of North America ... And maybe Greenland in the future. But right now all I see is a nation divided. I’m not sure we can survive adding a far left Canada right now. Greenland is another story. Lots of land and resources. Very few people. Strategically needed.
Let’s add Greenland and think about Canada.

That’s how you do it—One Province at a time. My family came from Canada—French Canadians who got mixed up in a revolt by Lois Reial and when he lost—they felt it was time to come to America rather than hang. My great grandfather said. “I had to leave Canada because I killed a couple of men, Its all right, they were just Englishmen.”
What percentage of Albertans live in Calgary and Edmonton? I imagine just like any big city, they are more liberal than the other areas.
There are large swaths of Canada that I would not want as part of the US. However, if Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba seceded and combined as one state (New Canada) ... I would be OK with that.
Taking Alberta would triple the USA oil reserves and add 30% or more in coal reserves as well. We definitely want Alberta. Calgary is Houston of the North it’s full of oil men. Albertans hate the French Canadians and their constant government control over them.
Coal

Shale gas and oil

And of course oilsands..which Canada has as much of as Saudi Arabia does sour oil. Twice what’s in the Midland Basin I also might add.

Alberta is also just in the other side of the dry Great Plains its eeastern side is relatively flat and it has lots of water flowing that way. It doesn’t take long to see the pipelines running south full of fresh water desperately needed in Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas.

Yeah we want Alberta. Give them two senators and 20 ish reps its worth it for sure.
A few years back we were vacationing on Guadeloupe and got talking to a guy from Alberta. He described Alberta as “Canada’s Texas”. And he wasn’t just referring to oil...he was also referring to politics.
Thats the problem.
There is a reason they travel to hell all the way down to YUMA AZ, to go get their teeth fixed and prescription glasses cross the border in Molar City.
That and they want to escape up there in the winter. Which i dont blame them.
People here need to study the water issue off the Columbia river coming out of Canada.
55,000 more votes and the eastern provinces would have been gone. Mid 90s.
With a population of 4.37 million, they would get maybe 6 reps. (approx 750K residents/rep). That said, Congress would have to decide if they would stay at 435 or increase to 441.
Saskatchewan and Manitoba, are the breadbasket of Canada they also have large amounts of rivers full of fresh water , at one ppoint in the 1960 there was a continental scale water plan to move water from Alberta and the prairie provinces into the US Great Plains, and bore under the continental divide in Wyoming to put water into the Colorado basin and let gravity take it all the way to California/Arizona borders hows that for mega eengineering. Canada has 20% of the whole planet’s liquid freshwater more than any other single nation. Yeah we want some of that good stuff. It’s long past time for Canada to be a territory or a state they only exist because we let them , protect them and economically allow them to exist. Join us or perish should be the conversation.

So maybe the Calgary Stampeders and the Edmonton ESKIMOES, will become NFL franchises.
The house desperately needs to be increased in size one rep per 790+K is not representative at all of the will of the people.
This is the best argument I have seen for why the number should increase.
Let’s send a bunch of USAID money into Canada to foment unrest to generate an artificial uprising....
Huh?
"Provenance" = "origin."

On a phone and the auto correct.
And of course. You paid no attention.
Post 30.
Typical for a Euranist.
Thinking about this a bit more ... if we did “New Canada”, Yukon and possibly NW Territory would want to join. They could become part of Alaska. Then we would have 50 contiguous plus Hawaii. It would not impact AK representation
Since it would be cut off from the rest of Canada, British Columbia would either become their own country, or the dream of Cascadia (BC, WA, OR) becoming a country would become a reality. Even tho I am originally from WA, I would be OK with that. Now we would be back down to 48 + Hawaii.
The Maritimes ... I dont know. But if we do get Greenland we could combine all the Maritimes + Greenland as one state with a population of just under 2M. Now we are back to 50 states.
ON and PQ (and possibly Nunavet) would be all that was left of Canada. I could see them splitting into 2 countries. Canada and French Canada.
