You get to spend on one of them and still be frugal.

My Dad,a child of the Depression, always lived below his means. Later in life he was very successful...to the point where he could easily afford luxury goods. But he always drove an Oldsmobile when he could have afforded a Mercedes and he always wore a Timex watch when he could have afforded a Rolex.

But OTOH he was always very good to his family. While he was driving Oldsmobiles my mother was driving Cadillacs and Lincolns. While he was wearing Timex watches my mother was shopping on Newbury Street in Boston (high end shops) and on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

And when he passed on (my Mom died long before him) he left a nice little sum behind for his grandkids. He told us that he had done his part for us so he wanted to focus on the grandkids. And we fully agreed with that attitude.

i’m neither “frugal” nor “cheap”, but i do seek out value, which means buy quality relative to purpose ... example: i buy SOME inexpensive stuff at Harbor Freight, esp. one-time-use items, but buy some expensive tools elsewhere ...

and MOST name brand badges mean little these days, since almost everything is made in china ... example: best bench grinder on the market for the money is the 11 amp Hercules models at Harbor Freight, and the “name-brand” models like DeWalt can’t hold a candle to them ... counter-example: Powermatic brand tools DO mean quality even though made in china ... and often, older tools are the best if one is capable and willing to do some rebuilding ...

“My Dad,a child of the Depression”

ditto ... so i inherited many of his values ... i tell people that i have the values of a grandchild of the Great Depression ...

Spending money on consumables. Frequently dining out is something my wife and I are working on. Plus, I’m a cook, which makes this even worse. Can we dine out 4-5 days a week? Sure we can. But now that I am of retirement age, we need to save as much as we can.

“and the real rule ought to be “whatever you buy, keep it as long as you can.””

yes, indeed, that IS the real rule for big-ticket items, esp. autos ... and sometimes the best buy is indeed a new one, depending on the model and circumstance ... and an extended warranty for the latest hybrids is no joke: those things have a boatload of complex and expensive electric and electronic components, so a single repair on one of those puppies can easily pay for the extended warranty ...

the rule is similar for major appliances, only now, repair is even more essential than new (esp. if one can do their own repairs), because older appliances are often better than anything one can buy new ...

Not a nationwide chain yet, but I frequently enjoy inexpensive food and drinks at Whataburger. If you live in range of one and are a senior, you get a free drink with your meal. With that receipt, you can scan it, to take a survey (2 minutes max) to get a free Whataburger coupon with purchase of medium fries and a medium drink. Cost for lunch less than $5.50. Repeat as many times as you like. About 50% off the menu board price. The survey option is open to all, not just seniors.

I would add banks with high fees and low interest.
Real estate agents.
Tenants.
High fructose corn syrup.
Tobacco.
Gambling.
Divorce.

There’s a point where frugal turns into niggardly.

Every morning I walk with my dog to get a cortado at the local coffee shop because that is how I like to start my day.

Alfred P. Doolittle would agree.

I’m of the same mind re: new cars and warranties. Especially since I got enough miles on me to preclude crawling under vehicles any more. There are some expensive elements on cars these days that can render what was a mode of transportation yesterday into a flowerpot tomorrow.

Mrs. M and I got where we are by eschewing new stuff for 35 years. But those days are gone.

I did by a brand new truck 20 years ago and I still drive it. I was able to pay cash for it. Before then it was beaters or classics older than me.

other than that, I am super frugal

I spend most of my money on women and booze. The rest I waste.

A thrifty spouse will solve almost every financial issue.

A spendthrift spouse will destroy even the most perfect financial plan.

We make our purchases with a bank debit card to earn interest on our checking accounts. We also have several credit cards which we pay off each month-so no interest charges. The credit cards such as Amazon and LL Bean gives us bonus points which reduces the cost of future purchases. The key point is that we pay off our credit card purchases within a week of the purchase.
