SS United States: Historic ocean liner completes journey from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama

MOBILE, Al. - The SS United States has completed its voyage from Philadelphia to Mobile, Alabama, where it will be prepped to become part of the world's largest artificial reef.

The historic ship spent over a week being tugged down the East Coast after it ceremoniously left its pier in South Philadelphia where it had been docked for decades.

"The SS United States will never stop teaching us about American pride, purpose, and possibility." Warren Jones from the SS United States Conservancy said.

Yes...I remember hearing about a US Navy ship that was sunk in WWII, and the sailors, as they were in the water watching her sink, cried for her.

Not because they were in the middle of the ocean with nowhere to go, because they had escort vessels to pick them up.

But because many of them had lived lives on the ship, and back in those days, it was not unheard of for men to spend a decade on one ship. It became their home. It was where they went after nights on liberty. And in war, they had experienced danger together.

And a great big hunk of steel became more than that to men who served on her.

I get that now.

>>>I also appreciated the fate of the USS America, which was sunk by ordinance testing...not a bad way for a warship to go down.<<<

I remember the date. It was on May 14th, 2005.

It was not only Israel’s birthday on the Western Calendar (as per 1948), it also aligned with the date (Iyyar 5) on the Hebrew calendar:

https://www.chabad.org/calendar/view/day.asp?tdate=05%2F14%2F2005

Wiki:

On 16 May 2005, Naval Sea Systems Command released the following statement:

On 14 May at approximately 1130 am EDT, a solemn moment of silence was held as the aircraft carrier ex-America slipped quietly beneath the waves. The data collected during the 25 days at sea from these test events will be of great value to Navy engineers and designers to improve the design and survivability of the nation’s future aircraft carrier fleet. The Navy provided a video of a memorial ceremony held onboard America before being scuttled, and a bronze plaque to members of the USS America Carrier Veterans Association and the America Museum Foundation. We thank and honor all the veterans of the USS America who lived and fought for freedom and democracy aboard this majestic vessel.[11]

The Jewish symbolic tradition is that the righteous die on the same day that they were born. Hence the dates for the Patriarchs, sons of Jacob, prophets and righteous kings and so on are given as the same dates for both.

Works into the theme of the continuing cycle of life.

CV-66

The added detail is that 66 is a Messianic-themed number because it equals “ben David”, the son of David. That same number also appeared as Helicopter 66, a SeaKing, when the Columbia and crew of Apollo 11 were picked up on July 24, 1969.

That wasn’t just any Moon mission as everyone knows. July 24, 1969 marked the safe return of the first men to walk on the Moon, which is symbolic of the Kingdom of David.

The date was Tisha B’Av, the saddest day on the Jewish calendar for being a day of tragedy, the date of the destruction of the Temples.

It had become a great day of joy. The Jewish tradition is that the soul of the Messiah is likened to a dove (Columbia = “dove”), and the most auspicious day for his soul to come down/be born is the day of greatest tragedy, Tisha B’Av.

The huge building visible along I-565, constructed to house the Saturn V, was named for the big donor(s) who got the naming rights. Can’t miss the name on the sign:

“DAVIDSON”

I’m all over the map with this stuff because it all “mysteriously” links together. ๐Ÿ™‚

As a matter of fact, who doesn’t love Merle Haggard? Now there’s a life story of redemption, from criminal loser to the beloved “Poet of the Common Man”:

I found a nice image of the arrival.

The United States is in need of Comfort --

โ€œTo ensure an efficient, safe and quality deployment, holes will be strategically cut around the ship to ensure she lands upright as she is submerged. Passages will also be opened allowing for marine life to thrive in and around the ship,โ€ Okaloosa County stated.

I occasionally visited one of the naval architects. He was retired from naval architectural work, but his office was jammed with many of his drawings that he developed for the ship.

You could not miss the large, full scale drawing of the SS United States on the wall.

No mention of this actual naval architect, at Wikipedia.

A similar situation with another friend, who actually developed the Ford Mustang drawings. He had all of them. No mention of this man, at Wikipedia.

Heh, when I need a birth date of someone, I go to Wikipedia. If it is anything else at all, they aren’t worth the electrons or the twitch of an index finger!

That is one beautiful ship design...I wish I could have seen her in her heyday! And I’ll bet that architectural drawing was magnificent behind his desk (I’ll bet!)

There is no place for a transatlantic ocean liner.

The world has 1, and it canโ€™t sell out its transatlantic voyages.

Unlike battleships no oneโ€™s going to fork out the dough to keep and maintain this thing

[EBH: also see photo at post 23; I should have pinged you.]

My goodness that's a beautiful photo; thanks for posting it, rl.

For "just" being a tow of an old, rusty hull, the journey sure provided some stunning imagery of this grand iron lady.

She reminds me of Johnny Cash's story of that Ragged Old Flag.

"She's in good shape for the shape she's in."

Now that the United States has landed on MARS (Modern American Recycling Services),

the flag analogy really adds a nice touch to the running storyline of my tagline. World events are finally catching up to it.

Hmmm...I've had it for a few years but when I checked some of the early Ingenuity flight threads for it, "Mars" wasn't capitalized.

Curious as for when I changed it, I bounced through those threads (keyword ingenuity pulls them right up).

"MARS" didn't appear capitalized until the thread for the final flight (72), Jan 25, 2024.

"We are going to conquer the vast frontiers of science, and we are going to lead humanity into space and plant the American flag on the planet Mars and even far beyond," Trump told Congress during his speech to a joint Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday* night.

"And through it all, we are going to rediscover the unstoppable power of the American spirit, and we are going to renew unlimited promise of the American dream," Trump said.

This ship story brought to mind the following story and poem about the beloved U.S.S. Constitution.

The poem below saved that noble ship, which yet floats today.

https://ussconstitutionmuseum.org/

Old Ironsides

AY TEAR her tattered ensign down!
Long has it waved on high,
And many an eye has danced to see
That banner in the sky;
Beneath it rung the battle shout,
And burst the cannon’s roar;
The meteor of the ocean air
Shall sweep the clouds no more.

Her deck once red with heroes’ blood,
Where knelt the vanquished foe,
When winds were hurrying o’er the flood,
And waves were white below,
No more shall feel the victor’s tread,
Or know the conquered knee;
The harpies of the shore shall pluck
The eagle of the sea!

Oh, better that her shattered hulk
Should sink beneath the wave;
Her thunders shook the mighty deep,
And there should be her grave;
Nail to the mast her holy flag
Set every threadbare sail,
And give her to the god of storms,
The lightning and the gale!

—Oliver Wendell Holmes

Author’s note

This was the popular name by which the frigate Constitution was known. The poem was first printed in the Boston Daily Advertiser, at the time when it was proposed to break up the old ship as unfit for service. I subjoin the paragraph which led to the writing of the poem. It is from the Advertiser of Tuesday, September 14, 1830:—

“Old Ironsides.-— It has been affirmed upon good authority that the Secretary of the
Navy has recommended to the Board of Navy Commissioners to dispose of the frigate
Constitution. Since it has been understood that such a step was in contemplation we
have heard but one opinion expressed, and that in decided disapprobation of the
measure. Such a national object of interest, so endeared to our national pride as Old
Ironsides is, should never by any act of our government cease to belong to the Navy,
so long as our country is to be found upon the map of nations. In England it was lately
determined by the Admiralty to cut the Victory, a one-hundred gun ship (which it will
be recollected bore the flag of Lord Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar), down to a
seventy-four, but so loud were the lamentations of the people upon the proposed
measure that the intention was abandoned. We confidently anticipate that the Secretary
of the Navy will in like manner consult the general wish in regard to the Constitution,
and either let her remain in ordinary or rebuild her whenever the public service may
require.”—New York Journal of Commerce.

This is a great thing the artificial reef program. However, spending several million and taking over a year to prep a ship that will be sunk is ridiculous!!

We should be able to put all kinds of debris into the Gulf and Atlantic without so much regulation. We could ease the problem of too many fishermen fishing in too few spots simply by easing regulation and allowing const. debris and other debris to become artificial reefs. The great thing is in less than a year all kinds of fish congregate on these artificial reefs and become new fishing spots.

Regulations are killing our industry.

Right now regulations on sharks that are tearing up game fish from Key West to the lower Texas Gulf and on the ocean side as well(I have done over 1,000 interviews) are destroying a fishery from true red snapper, redfish(red drum),snook, tarpon, bonefish and so many other game fish . Those of us who have done everything possible to make sure gamefish survive utilizing CPR=Catch photograph and release are being ignored on this vital topic.

If the level of shark killing gamefish continues we will destroy not only the fishery but the economy of the fishery as well.

That amounts to billions.

Fishermen buy second homes, six figure trucks to haul half million dollar boats and their wives spend millions in stores, restaurants not to mention millions in hotels.

If this vital fishery is allowed to be destroyed by sharks destroying gamesfish and fishermen going to the Caribbean or other destinations simply due to excess regulation it will be a sin.

Many concerned about the fishery are already doing what they must to maintain it. But, we would rather that regulation was eased until the fishery can get back to normal.

Thanks much.

I've visited her a few times. She's an absolute beauty.

(BTW, the main reason I regularly link to Wikipedia is that it's good for basic stats and general overviews -- kind of like trailheads, and it isn't complicated by annoying images and text that I'd have to slog through. Like the Freedom Trail site. Come on, geez. The site is linked on Wiki in any case. To me, fancy sites are like the typical shopping experience.. tedious at best, and then the time thieves follow me home, forcing me to pry through packaging and/or remove a bazillion tags and/or break out the Goo Gone before I can get back to doing something productive. /rant, guilty of what I just ranted about.)

The USS Constitution is located at the end (15 of 16) of the Freedom Trail, but that's more like where the end is only the beginning.

Plenty of "Huzzah!" merch to be found at the museum store.

Fun data points for when/how she got her nickname, although most probably don't share my definition of fun, with numbers, heh:

After one cannonball bounced "harmlessly" off the side of Constitution, a crew member is said to have yelled "Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!"[8]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Constitution_vs_HMS_Guerriere#Battle

Her captain at the time:

Isaac Hull

If your name is your destiny (that's a big deal in the Jewish world), his sure ranks right up there. Who could ever forget a ship's captain by the name of Hull? He *is* his ship.

Also, in Hebrew the hull of a ship is simply called a guf [ื’ึผื•ึผืฃ], "body". It's an important word in a key Messianic storyline, but who's thinking about a ship and her Destiny:

According to the Talmud, Yevamot 62a, the Messiah will not come until the Guf is emptied of all its souls. In keeping with other Jewish legends that envision souls as bird-like, the Guf is sometimes described as a columbarium, or birdhouse. The mystic significance of the Guf is that each person is important and has a unique role that only they, with their unique soul, can fulfill. Even a newborn baby brings the Messiah closer simply by being born.

The peculiar idiom of describing the treasury of souls as a "body" may be connected to the mythic tradition of Adam Kadmon, the primordial man...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guf#Tree_of_Souls

may be connected to... Adams

(I love maps.)

Isaac Hull's name in Hebrew is a transliteration for how it sounds in English [ืื™ื™ื–ืง ื”ืืœ], and equals 164, the same as "GPS" [ื’ึด'ื™ ืคึดึผื™ ืึถืก], so no one should be getting lost.

Anyway,

The Hebrew spelling of the Hebrew name "Isaac" [Yitzhak, ื™ืฆื—ืง] equals 208, the same as the abbreviation for the United States [ืืจื”"ื‘].

The USS Constitution's code letters are NAPJ, all of which are blue and white signal flags:

On the surface, the world appears to be a disconnected mess of a place, but it really all links up in the weirdest ways. It only looks like I'm wandering far off the trail here; yet,

Gene Autry, aka the Singing Cowboy... owned the Angels. His jersey is number 26, the same sum as the Tetragrammaton name of God (YHWH). The Autry is the home of the little dove ("Columbia", like Jonah, means dove), American Progress -- "an allegory for manifest destiny and American westward expansion".

Columbia -- a sweet gal who like Esther, had no interest in becoming royalty. But then somehow she won a beauty contest (obviously there simply was no competition), and the rest is history.

There's that "your name is your Destin-y" theme again. Doves as symbols.

The info at that link brings this post full circle right back to the Guf. See, there's no getting lost. Like any one else born of the Spirit, Columbia is a Wanderwort.

"Hull" [ื”ืืœ]-- there's that Maker's mark again.

"Come fly with US",

because it's always something. ๐Ÿ˜‡ ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

We should be able to put all kinds of debris into the Gulf and Atlantic without so much regulation.

"Bureaucrat" is the modern term for Egyptian taskmaster. Or as I like to call them, the quintessential "Can't Do" people.

Not having any concept or interest in actual accomplishment, they "work" to force the business of the Can Do People to grind to a halt, even leaving a toxic trail of debris in their wake for good people to clean up.

As for the timeline for the burial preparations. It's usually reported as a one-year project, but other reports say 6 months to a year, or even that:

"As she moved through the waves for the first time in 28 years, countless onlookers and admirers along the country's eastern seaboard were inspired by her majesty and beauty," Gibbs said in a statement. "Now, as she prepares for her next chapter, the SS United States Conservancy, together with Florida's Okaloosa County, will advance the design and development of a dynamic and immersive museum and visitor's center that will celebrate the ship's place in American history."

The ocean liner's sinking is scheduled for September.
