‘Emilia Perez’ has many problems. Its controversial star is just one of them.

” She was the first openly transgender Capitol Hill reporter in U.S. history.”
What is with these people and their ‘firsts’? Who cares?

This is a musical? Looks like we have come a long way from “South Pacific” and “Fiddler on the Roof”.
As if I needed it, here’s another reminder why I shouldn’t waste time and money on going to the movies anymore.

Trans trumps (pun intended?) black and for now, muslim.

Most honest reviews of this movie say its awful. It has a 16 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

but her chances of winning are complicated by a series of offensive tweets about Muslims and George Floyd that surfaced from years ago. Coming to terms with the post-election vibe change, the Academy realized there was a very real risk of Hollywood icon Demi Moore losing to a dude in a dress so they'd better dig up some old tweets.

For now in America. Islam has something to say about that in the future.

Sounds like a perfect Oscar candidate. It may win. Word on the street is that some of the Academy voters were so disgusted they're not even voting.
To: KC_Conspirator
Did it get nominated for all these Oscars because of this transgender storyline?
Was Hollywood hoping to make a statement as this person playing a transgender character is transgender in real life?
But then is all that thrown out the window. Because this individual made disparaging remarks about other protected classes of people?
This is amusing because Hollywood prides itself on being tolerant and liberal. This sort of situation must tie them in pretzel like knots.....

“I Saw the TV Glow” connected viscerally with nearly every trans person I know who saw it, and it was directed by nonbinary director Jane Schoenbrun. Wow, sounds like box office gold if every trans person goes to it.

Trans ACTOR.
NOW we can use the word “actress”? I thought that was sexist.

I am proud to say this is at least the 5th year neither my wife nor I have seen a single one of the “best picture” nominees. Now if only I can totally quit the MLB and NFL (made progress last year and only watched some playoffs after skipping regular season for the 1st time).

In the end these are all just movies, diversions and entertainments to amuse us in our spare time. Who cares what movie or performer or director gets some award (the Oscars were started by the big production houses to provide awards to their employees... in lieu of more money!). That all being said, Emilia Perez is a stupendously bad movie, way past the so-bad-it's-good milestone to simply awful. That it's nominated and being recognized at all is a statement on the current state of the industry, which is in the crapper.

“Emilia Pérez,” on the other hand, perpetuates a lazy trope about the trans experience that feels especially harmful in the present political climate.Hey Katelyn it's just a movie - and a very sh*tty movie at that - so save your kvetching about its depiction of your mental illness.
