Well, Finland joined NATO after the war in Ukraine started, after all those years of neutrality. There was never any talk about it before — plus we weren’t treating Finland like a de facto member of NATO, as we did Ukraine (arming and training the Ukrainian military, running joint NATO exercises in NATO, building Ukraine another port and running NATO exercises out of it, etc.). Before the Russian invasion, Ukraine had the largest army in Europe next to Russia, and they were shelling the LDNR on Russia’s border.

Finland is not a newly formed and inherently unstable country, which Ukraine is and was. It would not be so easy to overthrow their democratically-elected leader and install a belligerent puppet. There is no significant Russian minority there for Finns to oppress, as in Ukraine. No ethnic tensions we could exploit to cause armed conflict in Finland on Russia’s border. And lastly, while the Finns might let us build bases there, they aren’t fool enough to let us install missiles.

Sounds like a classic case of FAFO to me.

Finland has authorized the procurement of Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile-Extended Range (AARGM-ER) missiles from the United States.

Ukraine becomes a moot point once Russia absorbs Belarus.

Love how the attempt is constantly made to demonize Putin personally, not Russia.

I never said Ukraine should be in NATO. I have always been against NATO expansion. I thought it should be wound down and replaced with a new security architecture for Europe that included Russia and the former Warsaw Pact states, a big Partnership for Peace.

Includes Russia - yes. That could work to the benefit of all.

"Includes former Warsaw Pact states"? Not so much... a flat 'no'. Too 'emotional - they're more like Ukraine - - 'not ready for prime time'.

A new partnership for Peace and trading sounds hopeful. Worth thinking about.

Russians are buttholes.

Reminds me of 2007, sitting in Yalta, chowing down a Big Mac in the Yalta McDonalds. There was an anti-NATO demonstration going on in the town square. It consisted of a big sign, a very loud boom box playing Russian military music, and three people standing around. I don’t think anyone there gave a rat’s patootie about any of it.

Those times are long gone.

Ukraine might want to consider having UPS or FEDEX do the delivery next time.

Why does russia allow ukr to have working port facilities? If you’re at war with another country wouldn’t you destroy their ability to receive shipments of supplies? During our civil war the union blocked and or destroyed all of csa ports. The brits blockaded europe during the napoleonic wars and germany in ww1 and 2. I guess I’m surprised the russkies don’t do the same to ukr.
