James Rogers, 66, allegedly killed Mark Iacono, 65, with his bare hands Thursday evening following a Bay Shore Alcoholic Anonymous meeting, Newsday reported.

...

Long Island investigators said the two men started arguing over money in the parking lot of the United Methodist Church just before 9 p.m., soon after the meeting ended.

Iacono landed face down, and Rogers allegedly grabbed his head and smashed his face into the ground multiple times, News12 Long Island reported.

After a witness pulled Rogers off Iacono, he continued to kick him.

Rogers allegedly grabbed Iacono and flung him to the ground.

Well, this is a serious violation of the traditions.

Back in pre-gentrification days, there was an extremely rough looking crowd that came pouring out of a rowhouse just around the corner from me, every night a little after 9:00. For a long time, I used to debate whether it should be regarded as scary enough to avoid, but the crowd was always quiet and well behaved.

Some years later, after I had occasion to get my own Where & When, I understood why it was quiet and well behaved. All I’ll say is that you cannot sit in a meeting like that for very long and keep feeling sorry for yourself. And I know for a fact that for a half hour after the meeting, that was the safest street corner in Washington D.C.

I was tempted to make a snarky comment about meetings in NYC being worse because NYC lowlifes are worse than DC lowlifes (and I’m including myself here). But then I remember that this was back in Marion Barry days, so I’m sure we could match NYC drunk for drunk. Of course, that meeting didn’t have a parking lot, so nobody was hiding booze out in a car.

Gee I wonder if he practiced the 10th Step afterwards. No? I guess the part about “...and we practiced these principles in ALL our affairs” didn’t happen in this case.

Do NOT blame this on the coffee. That’s my go-to spots for free coffee everywhere and I don’t want it considered a dangerous substance needing control and monitoring (since I’ve been clean many years and abuse the privilege).

Bet he really keeps the folks in his nursing homes in line. Looks like he missed his calling as a mob enforcer. Or maybe not. Wonder how he behaved when he was drunk.
