This is not what government programs were meant to be. “I'm 30 years old. I have four kids and I've been on welfare for 12 years.” Interviewer “Do you live in government housing?” “Yes, since I was 18.” She then describes even more benefits she receives.

In the early 70s, I grew up in a low income neighborhood where there were three generations, but no fathers, in the same homes.

Yes.

And when did we ever stop requiring people to at least apply for jobs?

My sister-in-law was a teacher in an urban school. When she introduced her husband the kids said, “Oh, gross!” Marriage is gross. The boys had a II behind their name but nobody listed as the father on the birth certificate because if there was a father listed he could be pressed to take care of his own kids instead of our taxpayer dollars doing it. So those kids had the best clothes, best technology, they were rich. Because they had their dad just like everybody else but then they also had the taxpayers paying for all their luxuries. All because the moms wouldn’t name the father on the birth certificate.

It was infuriating.

With childcare at 250 per kid / wk. jobs paying 12-18 / hr at best. We created a society that can’t be sustained. Rewarding unmarried people was stupid.

If they’re gonna do that they need to decrease the amount for each new kid, since the youngest can use the hand-me-downs, etc.

My mom and dad had 12 kids. Poor farmers but we all learned how to work. We got free lunches but that was it. The only time I ever had new clothes was for Christmas. And to this day I’ve had a professional haircut I think 4 times in my entire life.

People who feel entitled have lost one of the best things in life: the ability to know what grace is and to be thankful. My dad said that Christmas was the saddest day of the year for him because he wanted to give so much but could only give so little. He and Mom used to wrap the presents one night right after the kids were in bed (but not asleep). We had curtains instead of doors because my dad hadn’t yet gotten the doors on in the addition he built all by himself to the 10x20’ house that housed the first 8 children. They would play with the toys and say, “Oh, I know Nellie is going to love this!” Tease us along for a bit, and then they’d say, “Nellie? Go back to bed!” They knew I was trying to peek through the curtain. Or we’d say we had to go to the bathroom. And they’d say, “Here, let me hide your present first...”

Christmas was full of love, and fun, togetherness. And we didn’t even realize that the gifts weren’t big items. I was over the moon when I got a Barbie doll. We had no idea Dad felt so ashamed of what he was able to give, and when he told us that we said he had given us more than any expensive gift could ever have given us: the ability to give and receive love, and to be thankful.

I feel really sorry for these families, to be truthful. At Christmas I filled a couple boxes for Project Angel Tree (?) and was so happy thinking of how some child would be happy to get what I could fit in each shoebox. Later I heard that some US recipients were complaining that they didn’t get expensive technology in their box and I thought, “Those are people like my SIL’s students who shouldn’t be getting boxes at all. When getting a doll or a toy car isn’t worth being thankful for, you’ve lost a very important part of your soul.”

My nephew married a woman with three kids. Two are “slow” and the third is autistic. (She and the father did drugs throughout the three pregnancies.)

She gets government money for each of the kids, and welfare, section 9 housing, free or low cost services (cable, internet, etc.), and more.

Her “earned income” tax refund is over $10k annually. She used to be required to work set number of hours to get that and would quit as soon as she met that requirement. Now, she does not need to work a day, thanks to Biden.

She knows every new entitlement coming and gets it. There’s more, but you get the idea.

I love my nephew but hate his family. Never associate with them. Grifters all!

“I may be wrong, but didn’t Clinton institute a program that made welfare more difficult to get?”

I remember that the Republicans passed bills on that 3 times to try to get Clinton to sign something. Each time the bill got weaker, then Clinton signed it on the 3rd try and used it to ‘prove’ that he was tough on Welfare Queens as he coasted to re-election in 1996. Clinton played Newt and the Republicans like a fiddle on that issue.

If I remember right, there was a trend to consolidate all welfare through IRS, thinking there was some financial accountability then.

Wasn’t long before every other department went back to offering their version of welfare and the problem was worse.

I think it would help if she could get some large earrings and wear those all the time.

1280/monthly, Medicaid and WIC, plus housing.

Torn between the waste of money and the Schadenfreude of her grim struggle. Since the money ain't stoppin' anytime soon -- Schadenfreude! Grist for the ghetto mill...

The people you are worried about will not do anything, they are already captured, freeing them will not happen by trying to step down, freeing a slave requires an act of real energy, slaves are not released easily.

They need a shock to the system. Stop it now period, there is no stepping down from the machine and evil that has them trapped.

Pathetic.

About the daughter, you may say she’s a dreamer, but she’s not the only one.—

The early versions of welfare from the New Deal onward described the system as a “bridge” between the short term misery of having no money and the new life of proudly earning one’s own income as a contributing member of society with a better life someday soon.

That bridge is now a record breaking length of expansion bridge.
