Russia Demands Ukraine Cities It Doesn't Control as Part of Trump Deal: ISW
Newsweek ^ | 2/27/2025 | Isabel van Brugen

Russia is demanding control of cities in Ukraine that its forces don't currently occupy as part of a deal with President Donald Trump to potentially bring an end to the war, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has said.

-snip-

Trump has suggested that both Russia and Ukraine must make concessions in the war. Kyiv has rejected any idea of ceding territory to Moscow, while Putin has demanded that Ukraine give up its aspirations of joining the NATO military alliance, and cede its Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

The ISW think tank, based in Washington D.C., noted that there are several large cities in these regions that Russian forces "do not currently occupy and have no prospect of seizing."

Russia's occupation of the remainder of the four Ukrainian oblasts would include large cities such as Kherson City (pre-war population of about 275,000), Kramatorsk (147,000 people), and Zaporizhzhia City (706,000)—all of which remain under Ukrainian control," the think tank said.

Conceding to Putin's demands would effectively hand over 1 million Ukrainians to Russia, the ISW said.

Most of the mineral wealth is in areas with historic and ethnic ties to Russia, persecuted by Kiev to try to obliterate Russian culture and affinities in quest to establish a pure slava Ukraini, oblasts voted in past Uke elections of decades for pro-Russia Ukrainian political parties, ultimately voted 2022 referendum to become part of the RF ( actually were until 1991) and were accepted legally by Russian Duma. Z is somewhat lucky Russia is only demanding Crimea and 4 border oblasts ( excluding Kharkov) and not the entire Black Sea coast …for now

The idea seems like trolling.

In any event, no freaking way the Ukies would accept that. If it was me, better to die on my dang feet.

Ukraine cannot possibly give that up. It cuts off access to the sea. That’s hugely problematic for grain exporting and likely even some of the minerals exporting.

In the 1st deal there was some sort of provision for the US to get some profits from other exports (like grain). That doesn’t work too well if Russia occupies all those southern oblasts.

The mining companies do the exploration. Not “the USA”.

In some cases, having the minerals’ supply is, for strategic reasons, more important than $$ recovered. Granted it’s a bit dicey and may explain Trump trying to split Russia off from China. That one’s tough too, though, because China won’t pay rubles for oil, so instead Russia has a pile of yuan much bigger than it’s likely purchases from China. Splitting Russia off makes that a lot worse, so, Pooty has a lot of incentive to not do that split.

Pooty has another problem too, as he’s been having to convert gold to cash, to prop up the ruble, and his gold reserves are getting low.

It would be suicide for the Ukies to give up Odessa.

"I think the Russians want to see the war end, I really do. But I think they have the cards a little bit, because they've taken a lot of territory. So they have the cards," Trump told the BBC on Air Force One.

Don’t think I know what most of that means.

The ruble is propped up by the Russian central bank. Its conversion to other currencies is not too important. As long as the CB provides money for the domestic populace to buy govt subsidized diesel and power tractors, all is well.

Now there is a question . . . which just occurred to me. Does Russia manufacture tractors? GPT says:

Yes, Russia manufactures agricultural tractors. Several companies in Russia produce tractors for agricultural use, including the St. Petersburg Tractor Plant, which produces heavy agricultural tractors and industrial tractors such as the Kirovets K-744 and K-9000.
Additionally, the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant manufactures industrial tractors.
Others — Other notable manufacturers include Alpha-Technic, Agrotechmash, and Zavod Specmashine “Baltietz”, each offering a range of wheeled and heavy agricultural tractors

The seeds go in the ground, the fertilizer is spread, the crops are harvested. All with domestic materials.

Quelle surpise. Classical Bolshevik “negotiating” from Putin’s regime. What’s mine is mine and what is yours is negotiatable.

Well, duh. That’s why Putin stole that land. The answer is staring you right in the face on that map. He doesn’t care about the people there. Hundreds of thousands of killed Russians under his watch prove that. He’s wants the resources there. Really, this isn’t complicated. That it is so hard for some to read that map is hilarious.

PS. You’re mistaken or deliberately stating a falsehood. There never was a “vote” in cities of Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhia. If the cause is just there is no need for gaslighiting or dishonesty.

On 27 September 2022, Russian officials of the (Russian fake) Central Election Commission in Zaporizhzhia declared the referendum passed, with 93.11% of 541,093 voters voting to join the Russian Federation. The declared turnout was 85.4%.

There were already over 700,000 people in the northern half of the oblast (over 300k of whom had fled from Russian occupied territory).

There are over 700,000 people in the oblast capitol city alone.

Basically, the number of Russkies who actually did vote for annexation - even if the numbers given were true, which they weren’t - the population of Ukrainian held Zaporizhzhia is double, perhaps even treble, that of the Russian occupied southern half.

There are videos online from the counting stations where reams of unused ballot papers were being stuck into the “da” piles.

And, there’s no doubt the Russians faked the outcome - because a Russian TV crew enthusiastically told the audience that in Zaporizhzhia oblast, 38,762 people voted for annexation. The Kremlin shat itself- that wasn’t even 5%.

I don’t see the Ukrainian Kuban on your map. Why is that? It it because Moscow Russified it during Soviet times and it doesn’t fit this narrative? You might want to learn some history and spend less time cutting/pasting gaslighting nonsense. Just a friendly suggestion....
