Abolish property taxes? DeSantis endorses the idea and explains how it could be done in Florida

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis endorsed the idea of abolishing property taxes throughout the Sunshine State, but explained that it would require a constitutional amendment.

The governor, who is currently serving his second term after a decisive re-election victory in Florida's 2022 gubernatorial contest, was responding to someone on X who advocated abolishing property taxes in the state and asked what would need to be done to make that happen.

"Property taxes are local, not state. So we’d need to do a constitutional amendment (requires 60% of voters to approve) to eliminate them (which I would support) or even to reform/lower them," DeSantis noted.

"I agree that taxing land/property is the more oppressive and ineffective form of taxation," the governor added.

Property taxes are immoral and should be illegal. Hope this goes nationwide.

The income tax should also be done away with. The feds have made the people “wage slaves”.

I’m all for it but there’s a mess underneath that needs to be worked out. In our county, property taxes fund a lot of stuff.

There are other ways to fund stuff, like a sales tax. It becomes a wash because property owners have more in their pockets and renters will likely see their rent reduced.

At least YOU will finally own your property, not the local government.

POTUS wannabe. That’ll do it.

How to make it up:
DOGE will cut spending and tariffs will help. Then there are always more sin taxes.

1978-Calif. Remember Prop 13?

easiest way would be to raise sales taxes.

I personally would LOVE this since I am property rich, but spend very little.

The property tax is an unreasonable burden. I paid taxes on my income for years. I paid sales taxes on purchases. And I am paying property taxes big time.

The property tax is the government’s way of taking your property — it really hates private property. With the property tax it takes about 3% of the value of your property every year. After about 30 years it has taken the full value of your house. But then it doesn’t stop. You keep paying the property tax no matter how much or how little you earn. Eventually you can take no more and you sell your house — and pay thousands of dollars to the state at the closing.

We have a modest 70 year old home on a small lot. Our taxes are nearly $4000 annually.

I like the concept of it. My annual prop. taxes run around 3.5K annually here in NEFL. Our sales tax is 7.5%. We pay no income tax in FL. Where will the revenue to run the state come from? We could raise the taxes on tourists hotel rooms, Disney and Universal, etc. and I think people would still come in droves. Of course we could always reduce the cost of government somehow... Maybe cut back on infrastructure costs to our already lousy roads but in MHO it still makes sense to keep the property taxes, given that 10’s if not 100’s of thousands of people move here every year.... Desantis is a great governor. Looking forward to find out what he has in mind.
