A hardware store I used to go to had two golden retrievers that roamed the aisles and had their dog beds behind the counter. I noticed one had a dent in his head and the other limped on his front leg-shoulder. When I asked about it, I was informed that the prior owner had committed suicide and first shot both his dogs. The dogs dragged themselves a half mile to a neighbor and the shooter did his best work on himself, because he died instantly.

The hardware store owner was a family friend, and took in the dogs. He felt the store, with constant activity and strangers would be the best environment for them to hopefully forget that trauma.

Wow! Shooting ones own dogs. That’s cold. I’ve grieved over my pets deaths more than friends and relatives. I guess because they are more dependent on me to provide for them. The only thing worse is killing children.
