Meta in talks for $200 billion AI data center project, The Information reports

Meta Platforms (META), the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, is in discussions to construct a new data center campus for its artificial intelligence projects, with potential costs exceeding $200 billion, The Information reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter.

Meta executives have informed data center developers that the company is considering building the campus in states including Louisiana, Wyoming or Texas, with senior leaders having visited potential sites this month, the report said.

Since the launch of Microsoft (MSFT) backed OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022, investment in AI has surged as companies across various sectors strive to incorporate artificial intelligence into their products and services.

A Meta spokesperson denied the report, saying its data center plans and capital expenditures have already been disclosed and that anything beyond that is "pure speculation".

Last month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that the company plans to spend as much as $65 billion this year to expand its AI infrastructure.

In comparison, Microsoft said it was planning to invest about $80 billion in fiscal 2025 to develop data centers, while retail giant Amazon (AMZN) stated that its 2025 spending would be higher than the $75 billion estimated in 2024.

“Louisiana, Wyoming or Texas”

IOW places where there’s no restrictions on power plant construction and of course low taxes.

No hypocrisy outta Menlo Park on that one, huh Mark?

Thanks, that’s what I was wondering, where were they going to site it, that they would have adequate power?

Someone is planning a server farm about an hour from where I live in Eastern Washington. County commissioners know but have not revealed who and a shell LLC is being used to pull permits.

Meta AI is crap. Meta is a cash cow though. They can afford to blow $200B. The shareholders may not like it though. Especially after the billions flushed on those matrix life googles or whatever they are called. You can be in a Justin Beiber video though! They should just buy a better AI, whatever they are doing in house is junk. After all most of their most popular or ‘advanced’ products were acquisitions not built in house.

Cold weather helps. Should put it in Alaska. Why pay WA state taxes on a startup? Even if you’re flush with cash. Could be MSFT or AMZN obviously. Keep it close. MSFT is tied up with ChatGPT, though a server farm could be used for a lot of different things.

Because there’s already a nuclear power plant in the neighborhood and the Columbia River for cooling and it’s already zoned industrial?

There are five data centers under construction in cedar rapids, Iowa. Coincidentally,Iowa’s only nuke plant is nearby in Palo. It was supposed to be closed but Is now being renovated.

Might be hard to get folks to relocate to Alaska, especially the cold parts.

Texas is a no brainer. Wyoming might have grid issues. Louisiana ... flooding? If you want a subsidy, I would bet on Louisiana. Texas gives you great infrastructure and low taxes and can draw people in. Wyoming, cheap land.

Yeah, my very first thought on reading the headline was "Where are they gonna get the power?"

If we thought EVs were going to play heck with the grid, wait and see what all these AI data centers do.

Californicators love bragging how big California’s economy is and completely ignore it was conservative policies and free markets that created that environment. The modern crop of Sacramentoids are killing the golden goose as fast as they can thinking the money will just stay there forever.
