If cutting government funding shuts down an NGO, it is not, and never was, a Non-Governmental Organization.

With leftists the rule of opposites applies.

Democracy = a boot on your face

Compassion = hate and censorship

NGO = government funded leftist organization

By definition, this is the truth. This also breaks it down for the average person, who never heard of or thought about what that government agency means.

I have to disagree.

Plenty of formerly charitable organizations have succumbed to the lure of government funding and over time become addicted to those funds.

Once great Catholic Charities will be lucky to survive cuts in government support.

“Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket.” ― Eric Hoffer, The Temper of Our Time

Catholic Charities has been engaged in child trafficking, bringing children across the border, busing them across the country, and handing them off to anybody who shows up.

Carlos Arrelano witnessed it and was an unwitting participant.

Once great Catholic Charities that have become specialists in performing an end around our immigration laws deserve to have that luck run out. Hopefully with a great deal of anguish and tears.

what’s to disagree about?
they went from charitable orgs to (primarily funded) government orgs.

they sold their souls, so they could feel good, supposedly doing charity, while making taxpayers foot the bill.

I wasn’t happy decades ago when I realized what was going on. It shocked me how Christian churches and orgs all seemed to be getting govt monies for things. They compromised themselves to feel good rather than uncomfortable as Christ said we would feel following Him, doing things He wants us to with God’s help, and not by our own power or worldly ways (govt $)

This brings up a question I have on NGOs in general. When some bureaucrat distributes money to them, or even if congress were to directly send them money, what sort of reporting requirements do these NGOs need to comply with? A rigorous line by line accounting of every dollar they spend? No meaningful accounting? Somewhere in between? And if these NGOs do make reports, who gets to see them? It seems that any public money should be strictly accounted for in terms of what it is spent on, and the public needs to have ready access to this information.

It is so refreshing to see “common sense” returning to political discussion.

When I led a mostly USAID-funded UNDP project in Afghanistan, we were required to have an outside consultant perform an M&E (Monitoring and Evaluation) report that focused on program effectiveness, not financial accountability. Other donor agencies such as JICA and DFID also did inspections and evaluations.

There were also financial reports, but we were under-budget and UNDP did that, so it was never an issue.

As for USAID, we prepared a map-based report called Geobase of all the projects USAID was doing in Afghanistan. We also produced the 3-W report, Who's doing What Where, that was used throughout the development organizations.

That said, there was an office or officer who was supposed to prepare a report of the all US expenditures in Afghanistan, and it never got done right. Of course, Afghanistan was a tough environment back, but that's not an excuse.

A marginally related incident comes to mind. I was in a meeting with all the donor agencies for the final presentation of the ANDS (Afghanistan National Development Strategy). The French donor rep asked about birth control, as a rising population lowered the development impact. The President's representative beat around the bush, but afterwards I heard him say he had already spoken to the President about it, but he knew the mullahs (islamic religious leaders) would never support it, so he couldn't pursue it.

they sold their souls, so they could feel good, supposedly doing charity, while making taxpayers foot the bill.

And we have GW Bush to thank for this development.

His administration had the idea that charitable organizations could dole out government charity at lower cost than government itself could.

And they did until the government loaded on all of the bureaucratic paperwork that follows government money. Next came the professional class employees to make sure that the government requirements were met.

Soon enough charitable organizations are government organizations in every sense except name.

A very sad state of affairs.

Catholic orphanages were once the primary adoption agencies almost everywhere.

And they were very careful about who got their kids.

Political correctness has ruined even them.

Which demonstrates why government should not fund private charities.
