According to local legend, the Mukuyu Slave Tree was used as a gathering point for slaves who were captured and brought to Livingstone for transport to other parts of the region. The tree was reportedly used as a place of rest for the slaves before they were taken to the nearby Zambezi River, where they were loaded onto boats and transported to their final destinations.

Exports of African slaves from east Africa to the Caliphate began after Muslim Arab and Swahili traders won control of the Swahili Coast and sea routes during the 9th century .

The black people were called “Zanj” in Arabic and captured from the interior in the present-day lands of Kenya, Mozambique, and Tanzania and brought them to the coast.

Muslim merchants traded an estimated 1000 African slaves annually between 800 and 1700, a number that grew to thousands during the 18th century.

The estimate is that about 8 million black slaves were sent over the the centuries to the Caliphate.

That compares with the 9 million black slaves sent across the Sahara.

If you google the subject, it’s now debated whether the number of slaves and the scope of the slave trade TODAY is the largest in world history. The Muslim Arab/African slave trade still continues, India has huge numbers of slaves from Nepal, etc., and slave trafficking has grown across Europe and the Americas. People think of slaves as always being in chains, but that’s not generally how it works, and thus people tend not to recognize slaves even when they run across them.
