Why not just shorten the field to 50 yards?
Probably easier to move the football back to goal line for the kickoff and require the kicking team to be stationary until the receiving team returned the football to the five yard line . . .
I live in the South and married a girl that loves football so I’m watching SEC football and pro by default, but I refuse to spend money on anything that goes to the nfl.
Slightly off topic but relevant.....I find it hard to believe gambling isn’t rampant among players, and players attempting to manipulate the final score and or outcome to that end, and considering some of the play I’ve seen in the last 10 years it wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
and the onside kick rule is ridiculous. You can no longer surprise the opponent with one. You can only onside kick in the 4th quarter, only if you’re behind AND you have to notify the opponent you’re going to onside kick it.
It’s a joke..
So true. NFL wants scoring and under 2 minute drives to dominate the games
It’s all about getting more women to watch. That has been the curse of sports over the last 30 years, the need for networks to cater to women viewers.
“ The should move the kickoff yard line further back, forcing receiving team to run the ball = fewer touchback.”
Best answer yet! Kick off from the 25 yard line. Pretty much guarantees a return.
I assume that a few compilers and odds makers in Vegas determined that doing so would raise betting revenue.
Yeah, I agree. But players get paid tons of money now in part because there's always the risk of career ending injuries. I think flag football will bring down wages.
Place the ball at the 20-yard line. Eliminate kickoffs.
Eliminate kickoffs, require punts instead.
The day Colon Krapernik took a knee was the last time I paid attention to the NFL. That said, videos like the one below demonstrate how great some football was, and how far it has fallen.

Move kickoffs back to the way there were before this idiotic change.
“I think flag football will bring down wages.”
What some of those guys are getting paid is obscene IMO......NBA as well.
The minimum salary for a first-year nfl player is currently, as of the 2024 season, sitting at $795,000.
It’s no wonder ticket prices are in the stratosphere.
maybe pop warner rules need to be put in place for the NFL.
Awarding more yards they didn’t earn. Remember when touchbacks were starting on the 20 yard line? How come the kicking team gets nothing for a good kickoff? If the ball gets kicked out of the back end zone then start at the 25. If the receiver touches it down in the end zone then start at the 30. That should be the most generous yard line to ever start from barring a penalty on the play. NFL rules becoming like Govt welfare assistance to the able bodied.
It’s interesting to see some of these rule changes that have been implemented in recent years. Many of them are tied to the same thing: kickers have just gotten so good that some elements of the game — like long kickoffs and extra points — became almost automatic.
Going by the stats in this source, the NFL had only 7 field goals of 60+ yards before 2010.
Since 2010, they've had 32. Of those 32, half of them have occurred after 2020.
It's been an arms race of legs.
