Cryptocurrency exchange says it was victim of $1.5 billion hack

A major cryptocurrency exchange says it was the victim of a sophisticated hack that stole about $1.5 billion worth of digital currency, marking one of the biggest online thefts of all time.

Bybit said Friday that a routine transfer of Ethereum, one of the most popular cryptocurrencies, between digital wallets was “manipulated” by an attacker who transferred the crypto to an unidentified address.

The company sought to reassure customers that their cryptocurrency holdings with the exchange were safe. The company added that news of the hack had led to a surge in withdrawal requests and there could be delays in processing them.

Ben Zhou, Bybit’s CEO, said on social media that his company would remain solvent even if the hacked crypto wasn’t recovered.

“We can cover the loss,” he said.

Stealing cryptocurrencies is a favorite tactic of hackers. North Korean state hackers, in particular, have been linked to several high-dollar crypto thefts in recent years.

When it comes to money if you don’t have something tangible
that another human can touch, it is not real.
I have a degree in computer science.
I get my pension and social security via
computer every payday.

But I know that can be destroyed by any number
of occurrences.

My backup is stuff I can touch and bargain with.
be it paper money, bullets, guns, cattle, tools
or what ever.
These things don’t get obliterated by a hacker, or electrical failure.
Y’all keep that in mind when you plan for disasters.

Wouldn’t it carry a unique marker and be easily identified before it could be transferred?

An inside job? I can see the owner of one of these crypto joints, telling a hacker how to steal $200 million dollars. Then splitting the proceeds.

What, has to be fake news.
We have been assured over and over again that “Blockchain” and Crypto are impossible to hack.
Ususally on the same day as another breathless announcement on the wonders of AI, and Quantum computing.

Yep, no exchanges, practice “self-custody” (keep your crypto private keys in your personal possession). If you must be a day-trader then pick a better exchange or off-load your crypto to your personal wallet after every trading session.

The “crypto” wasn’t hacked, the “bank” (exchange) was robbed. Take personal possession of your crypto assets:

Yes and Amen, there are all kinds of real property that constitute hedges against inflation.

In this household, first and foremost are backups to essentials like water and electricity.

Next, food and the means of producing food.

Third, “means of production”. “Tools”

Ancillary: protecting the above. That means guns ‘n ammo but also fencing and monitoring (without relying upon the “cloud”).

I had several conversations with one of the top crypto theft detectives in the world as part of a crypto forensic case I was working on.

He assured me that ALL crypto transactions are able to be traced. The problem is doing anything about it when it is traced to Russia or North Korea.

It looks to me that “money in the bank” is lot safer than crypto.
So many crypto hackers, they beat all the bank heists in history!
