The United States claims to be the land of the free, but freedom is impossible without individual privacy. You must be certain the government will not arbitrarily monitor you in your home or on your devices. Yet the US legal system does little to protect your privacy rights. Eight years ago, we wrote about Trump taking control of the NSA, however former President Biden also expanded the surveillance state, signing the law that renewed Section 702 in 2024(new window) (which we also covered). In general, the US surveillance state has greatly expanded its scope, under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Because of this, we’re providing a comprehensive update on how government agencies, law enforcement, and corporations infringe on your data privacy and how you can take actions to protect yourself online.

With current-day processors it is a fairly simple task.
Even with billions of call records logged per day, it does not take very long to find all of your calls. And "burner" phones have flagged ID codes which make them easy to single out for special attention.
Automated phone tree search will catch all of your friends too. There are user-friendly applications specifically designed to rummage through phone logs for persons of interest. All they need is data sources, and a starting point.
Phones are government-approved tracking and surveillance devices.
HOW MUCH FUN ARE THEY HAVING LISTENING IN ON “CALLS TO SEX TALKERS”?
Automated voice analysis systems can listen in to any phone call that is on a "person of interest" list. The monitoring can be done in real-time. No human may ever hear those calls unless they are flagged for special attention by the monitoring software.
I would expect that every international phone call is monitored in such fashion. Or at least every phone call to/from selected countries.
Does the government listen to my calls? Well, if they ever do, I suppose I am in position 26,090,176 on their action list and they are a bit short-handed these days, what with DOGE and all. It will take them a while to get around to me.

I have often wondered that...and lately figured the “government” was growing so that there would be a minder for every citizen.
The writer uses “Trump” and “Former President Biden”. If he’s already that biased or, perhaps, worse, ignorant, I stop reading.
Man, I sure hope Proton doesn’t go liberal-nutcase on me; I like their products.

Rest assured ICE cannot even find illegals without lots of difficulties - finding you would be a real challenge. We’d have to import many millions more people to assign a minder to an individual.
Again finding ‘your’ call out of billions taxes any system, unless ‘you’ are already flagged for some reason.
Wow! Only 26,090,176 on their action list that’s pretty high. But I know what its like having been followed and having my phone (landline) tapped for years, after I left NSA.
We did the same thing during the riots in 1964. Nothing new. But we recorded the conversations and the location, as well as any other IDs associated with the calls - it was deemed a matter of NatSec at the time.
